Pastor Mary Beth's Musings

This morning, I saw today’s New York Daily News front page. (I don’t subscribe--a friend posted it on Facebook). The Daily News is known for their often provocative front page--but this one, in response to the mass shootings in San Bernardino yesterday is particularly riveting:

“God Isn’t Fixing This”

This is one of those weeks when I don’t even know where to start. The news of the second mass shooting in less than a week is disturbing and fear-inducing. It is news that continues the dark theme that seems to be underscoring this season of waiting, anticipating, hoping for light. What do we do in response?

There may be something to learn from the characters who are Seeking Christ in the Nativity story--especially those we find in Matthew 2--the Magi who came to Jerusalem, following a Star. They were seeking for light and hope in a very dark and frightening time.

This Sunday, we’ll dig into their story. Perhaps we’ll find hope for our dark and frightening time. And perhaps we’ll begin to hear from God what GOD would have us do.

I’m praying for you. I hope you’re praying for me. I hope to see you Sunday morning.

Glory to God!

Pastor Mary Beth

Beyond Bethlehem

Sound and Media Tech Hire

The Staff-Parish Relations Committee is pleased to announce that Noah Curran has joined the VRUMC staff as Sound and Media Tech effective December 1. As Sound and Media Tech, Noah will be supervising the volunteer team who provide the important, behind-the-scenes technical support to enhance our worship experiences through sound and media. He will also be working closely with the trustees as we begin to replace our outdated sound equipment with new, state-of-the-art equipment. Please join us in welcoming Noah to the VRUMC staff!

The search for a new Director of Music and Arts is in full swing. The search team, comprised of Mike Curtis, Michael Duval, Vicki Duval, Martha Giles, Nan Moser, Mark Packer and Cassandra Williams, will be phone screening several candidates during the next few weeks. They plan to meet face-to-face with semi-finalists for the position in early January and bring finalists for a choir audition in mid-January. Please be in prayer for the search team and the person that God will bring to join the VRUMC family next year!

Cookies, Volunteers for Christmas Eve

Want to help make this year’s Christmas Eve services special for our guests and members? Cookie bakers, greeters and door hanger volunteers are needed. Please indicate your willingness to help on the back of Sunday’s attendance card.

Serving Opportunity at CCA Food Pantry

The CCA Food Pantry has a serving opportunity this holiday season for those who want to volunteer their time to help those in need. Volunteer days and times are December 10, 15 and 17 from 1-4 p.m. or 6-8:30 p.m. Work includes sorting canned goods and restocking pantry shelves. Sign up to participate in the narthex.

Jesus is the Light Family Night

Families of children 5th grade and younger are invited to help us share the light on Sunday, December 13, with Advent activity stations and campfire fun! The event will begin at 2 p.m. There is no cost to participate; canned meat donations will be collected for the CCA Food Pantry. RSVP to lisa@vrumc.org so supplies can be planned accordingly. Please include any allergies or intolerances.

CCA Tree with Christmas Wishes

Visit the CCA Tree in the narthex and browse the ornaments labeled with Christmas wishes from the angels CCA serves. Please consider taking an ornament, filling that wish, and returning the new, unwrapped item to the tree by Thursday, December 17. If you choose to buy a gift card, stop by the Faith Funds shopping card table on Sunday morning or shop at the church office. Please leave any gift cards with the church office.

Women’s Fellowship Social

The women of the church will meet for a fellowship social at 6:30 p.m. Friday, December 18, at the home of Nikki Monkman-Lou. Come for soup and bunco. Please RSVP to Nikki Lou, nlou.shoes@gmail.com.

Faith Funds Shopping Cards

Avoid the mall craziness and shop on Sunday morning at the gift card table in the church narthex. There are a variety of shopping card options, including retailers, restaurants, fast food and entertainment. They are purchased at a discount and sold at face value. If a gift card isn’t in stock, place an order and receive the same week.
