Mass Hysteria And How It Relates To The Crucible

Mass Hysteria- Is when the community or a large group express the same behavior or beliefs when a tragedy happens that can put them at risk

Mass Hysteria In Real Life

An example from recent history is 9/11. When 9/11 happened, the United States didn't know what was going on at the time, let alone the people that were at the scene of tragedy. Many people and communities acted this way because they were unaware what was going on and didn't know how to react. It led to the public to panic and left families scared.

On 9/11, Osama Bin Laden was the leader of this attack. His soldiers that he ordered were Muslim, and since the cause of mass hysteria, citizens from around the world have in the past been blaming Muslims for terrorist.

In "The Crucible", innocent people were blamed for witchcraft by others because, either they were a different race or ethnicity; they were poor or rich; or they were ranked low in their society.
This relates to the 9/11 incidents of people blaming innocent people for their ethnicity.

"The Crucible" and 9/11 have many connections that were main events in history caused by tensions, impacts and reactions of people.

The people in Salem started to be untrustworthy of one another in the community.
This relates to the airport security being "unsafe" and "dangerous" by passengers.

What Event Spurred The Hysteria ?

The Puritan society of The Crucible is a religious, tightly bound, and watchful group of people. They came to America to practice their religion in peace, and the community has worked together in order to survive. Their rules and morals are based on their religion, not any form of government. It was a society built on beliefs and values.

The Crucible shows a community that is "ready" to turn on each other. There was no privacy, and everyone knew what went on in everyone else's home. Reputation was almost as important as godliness, and within this town they are actually equal. Reverend Parris must NOT lose his pristine reputation. The illness of his daughter, and the actions of his niece Abigail are all suspect.
