Advent Devotional Series: Mary in the Gospel of Luke

To complement the Advent season and the unique Bible Study happening during the week, Rev. Hagler and Liz Remelius, DCE, have chosen to provide a short series of Advent reflections and devotions based on the Gospel of Luke’s nativity story, focusing specifically on the presence and role of Mary. We hope that our thoughts and words provide constructive substance for your personal or family devotionals as we wait together for the birth of Jesus.

The devotionals will be sent via email, available in print in the church Narthex, and uploaded to our new blog. Click here to read the devotionals online!

Throughout this short series we will be looking at the Nativity from Mary's point of view. We encourage you to read these passages with open eyes and experience the story of the Holy Family anew. Beginning with the Annunciation and ending with infant Jesus' presentation to Simeon, we will follow Mary and her small family through this miraculous period of their lives that changed the world.

This week's devotion is written by Liz and focuses on the Annunciation of Mary (Luke 1:26-38).

Adult Sunday School Class Opportunity

For the next two Sundays in December, TILT (Topics In Life Today) will be led by Rev. Hagler and Liz Remelius.

Sunday, December 7th: Pastor Doug Hagler will be leading a "Bible 101" class, which he describes as "a focus on a combination of what is in the Bible and different approaches to take in reading different parts of it." He welcomes your questions and hopes this will be a conversational learning experience. Bring your Bibles!

Sunday, December 14th: Liz Remelius, the Director of Christian Education, will be leading "The Frozen Chosen: Or, the History of Presbyterianism in One Hour." She describes this class as including "the briefest timelines about Christianity, followed by a conversation about the development of Presbyterianism out of the Reformation and into today, looking specifically at the American Church." A sense of humor and curiosity are all that is required!

If either of these classes interest you, or you would simply like to blow away the next Bible related category on Jeopardy!, join us in the Parlor on December 7th and 14th at 9:00AM!

We want to provide you with the programming and faith-related topics YOU are interested in! Please email Liz with any topics you are interested in so we can plan events or Sunday School series!

Lighting of the Advent Wreath

If you are interested in being one of the individuals/families who light the candles in our wreath during Sunday services in Advent, please contact the church office!

Ready for Christmas

The church is all decorated for the Christmas season! We hope you will join us in worship on Sundays at 10:30 AM and on Christmas Eve at our 5:00 or 10:00 PM service!

Add a Little Drama to Your Advent Season!

Join us on Sunday, December 7th at 5:30 PM in Fellowship Hall for an intergenerational look at the Magnificat (The Song of Mary)- through drama!

We will be looking at the message of the Magnificat and then interpreting it in a series of tableaux. We'll end the evening with a presentation of our dramatic portrayals. Photos of the tableaux will be at the heart of a brief video that will be shown in church on December 14th.

We promise: there's no memorization, no stumbling over your lines! Just a chance to pain a picture of a fascinating passage of Scripture!

Pizza and salad will be served.

All ages are encouraged to come! Bring your creativity along and enjoy a fun evening with your church family!

We need volunteers to help watch the youngest members of our church family.

If you are able to be in the nursery any Sunday between now and the end of 2014, please email Liz or the church office!

Sunday School Help

We are looking for another volunteer to work with our 4th-6th grade children beginning in January! If you are interested or if you have any questions about the responsibilities, please contact Liz or Meg.

Advent Bible Study

This year's Advent Study will utilize Adam Hamilton's Not A Silent Night. Hamilton's book focuses on the story of Jesus from Mary's point-of view. The book begins at the end of Jesus' life, travels back in time as she witnesses his life and ministry, and ends at the beginning, with the birth of Christ in the stable.

Peg Russell will be leading and facilitating the group discussion. They will meet on Tuesdays until December 6th (no meeting on November 25) in the sanctuary. In order to accommodate schedules, the group will meet at two different times on Tuesdays: 10:30 AM and 7:30 PM. Both sessions will cover the same material.

If you are interested, hard copies of the books are available in the church office for $12. Kindle users can download the book from Amazon.

Join us for this unique Advent study!
