LEARNING
SET UP TO WIN by Marie Amaro
While we all know students work better in a secure, structured, safe and supportive environment, how do we set students up to win? How do we make the boundaries clear and support students to learn when they don’t stay within those boundaries?
Building a strong foundation for learning by making expectations about behaviour and work standards explicit to students from the beginning saves time, energy and stress, increasing productivity in the longer term. We all need to know the rules of the game before we can win!
Off task, disruptive behaviour of students can be one of the biggest stressors for teachers. Having consistent, clear expectations reduces uncertainty and anxiety for students and teachers increasing opportunities for success.
Encourage a problem solving mindset, develop resilience, promote respectful relationships and build a positive classroom culture:
1. Negotiate class expectations. Hold a class meeting and give all students a voice in how they think the class should operate. Consider all variables: how does a student ask to go to the bathroom, how do they request teacher assistance and what do they expect from the teacher? Create a whole class agreement and have everyone sign.
2. Explicitly teach your expectations for behaviour and work tasks. Use role plays, written tasks, visual aids etc. to teach the behaviour you want to see.
3. Have expectations displayed prominently in the classroom with visual cues. Consider how stop signs on the road or quiet signs in hospitals remind us of expected behaviours.
4. Reinforce students for following class expectations. Specific praise reinforces the target student and prompts others to do the same. An individual reward system and/or whole class reward system used strategically builds morale and class cooperation.
5. Negotiate fair, respectful responses with the students for when they don’t follow the expectations. Have a clear hierarchy of consequences that are meaningful, restorative and teach students the skills they need to get along with others and work productively in the classroom.
6. Reteach expectations when necessary e.g. in a new situation or when behaviour has deteriorated. Never assume that teaching a skill once is sufficient.
When we create a positive classroom climate that supports all students to learn, cooperate and care for each other we are modeling vital social skills and contributing to students becoming productive, well-adjusted members of society.

SAFE & FAIR CLASSROOM BEHAVIOUR
We can place the widest range of behaviour in this two point framework and at the same time support student ownership and development of their behaviour through this simple and exact focus.
UNACCEPTABLE CLASSROOM BEHAVIOUR
When a student’s behaviour is unacceptable in class - e.g’s include :-
· Non-compliance to rules above;
· Disruption to other’s learning;
· Disruption to the smooth running of classroom routines;
· Continuing insolence;
· Continuing disobedience;
Our school REFERRAL process can be used.
Before referral, the student will be directed in their class by the teacher to reflect on the RULES
* My Behaviour Must Be Safe !
* My Behaviour Must Be Fair !
Make a Good Choice !

MY PLAN TO BE MORE SUCCESSFUL IN MY CLASSROOM
Name _______________________ Class _______ Date _______
For me to be more successful in class I need to stop doing some things and start doing new things…
BEHAVIOUR I MUST STOP
Or CLASS RULE/S I BROKE
BEHAVIOUR I MUST START
We’ll know that I’m successful when…
And I’ll feel ….
If I’m not successful, then these things will happen next…
And I’ll feel ….
When Will You Start Your Plan?
Signed
Generally it is recommended that the process starts again after each break period. ie warning 1 etc. For stage 3 students there will be a higher expectation across the day.
NB. Consistent and regular breaking of classroom rules across a day would require consideration of a range of options including teacher / parent interview, behaviour plan. If these classroom teacher actions did not work then referral to the Assistant Principal for advice and support would be the next action.
Students who have a repeat history of referral in a term may require Personal Learning Plans (PLP) and / or Individual Behaviour Plans (IBP) to be developed. The Stage Assistant Principal will support the class teacher to implement these processes in consultation with parents of the student and in some cases referral to additional support services.

Playground Duty Draft - Begins Week 2 Monday 1st February
RFF Timetables
RFF will begin on Monday 1st February.
The RFF will be provided by the following staff :-
1. Early Stage 1 - Lou Graham - Timetable to be advised.
2. Year 1 Stage 1 - 9am - 11am - Amanda Ellem - Timetable attached.
3. Year 2 Stage 1 - Belinda Mirana - Timetable to be advised
4. Stage 2 and Stage 3 - Simon Prichard - Timetable attached.
- Stephen Ward - Friday - Timetable attached.
Due to the nature of this staffing there will be a range of delivery patterns to be negotiated within each stage / class. In the main it looks like each RFF period will be required to follow the classroom timetable of KLA delivery to ensure the KLA teaching requirements are met. In some instances there may be able to be specialisation of a subject delivery negotiated.
Library and Computer Lab.
NB - The library and Computer Lab timetable is a collaborative team teaching model - not RFF. This will be supported by our teacher / librarian - Charmaine Johnson. It will enable the increased use of google apps and joint unit planning within and across stages. For stage 2 and 3 - also the borrowing and use of Literacy Pro / Lexile readers will be a priority in this timetable. A training session will occur early in term 1 regarding literacy pro and the supportive resources available.
Draft timetables have been distributed by email.
Thank you for your consideration of these drafts. Please discuss with your supervisor to further progress planning:-
ES1 - Lou Graham
