Italy in General

Originally, Italy was apart of the Roman Empire. Italy is located in the central Mediterranean, and is close to the Southern Sea. With an area of 116,303 square miles, Italy is mostly rugged and mountainous. There are usually cold, northern winters and hot, humid summers. Some places, mainly in Central Italy, have milder summers and winters.

Italy has been a Republic since June 2, 1946. They were one of the founders of the European Union in 1952. The Euro is Italy's current currency. The Euro replaced the grana, ducat, zacchino, florin, and giulia.

History of the Flag

The Italian flag design was inspired by the French flag, which was brought to Italy by Napoleon in 1797. It was adopted on June 19, 1946. The green stripe represents hope, the white stripe means faith, and the red stripe represents chairity.
