Highland Happenings

October 1st, 2021

A Great Way to End September!

This week brought Student Council elections and the first All-School Meeting of the year. It was fantastic to bring back these Highland traditions. During our All-School Meeting we introduced and welcomed all of our new Huskies to Highland, kicked off our year-long color wars competition, and of course sang the Highland song. Our PTA sponsored Read-a-Thon has been a great success so far! The last day to log reading minutes is today. Thank you to all of those who have participated! As always, please let me know if you have any questions, concerns, or feedback.

Optional Student COVID-19 Testing

Voluntary COVID Testing Program Signup

District 58 encourages families to consider signing up for free PCR COVID-19 testing for District 58 students. Registration for this optional testing program is open and our program is actively underway.

Families can select from any or all of three types of testing services including:

  1. Weekly screening testing (routine testing)

  2. Symptomatic testing (testing when a student or staff member develops symptoms at school)

  3. Test-to-Stay (testing for situations in which a student has been identified as a close contact)

Test-to-Stay, an IDPH-endorsed process that allows a close contact to remain in school with regular antigen testing, will begin next week. Please see the district communication regarding the IDPH's guidance regarding when Test-to-Stay can be implemented in schools.

The student sign up for our school can be found below.

Illinois Science Assessment

Each year 5th grade students across Illinois are required to take the Illinois Science Assessment (ISA). In the Spring of 2021, school districts were given a choice to administer the assessment in April, or to postpone the assessment until the fall. Because our students were just returning onsite for a greater period of time in April 2021, we elected to maximize their onsite instructional time rather than take that time for the state assessment. As a result of that thoughtful decision, we now need to administer the assessments that we postponed. Our current sixth grade students will take the ISA next Tuesday, October 5th. If you have any questions about the ISA, please reach out.

Illinois Assessment of Readiness Testing Continues Next Week

Each year, the State of Illinois has a series of required assessments for students. One of these is the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR). The Highland Fall IAR schedule can be found below. Students will take one test per day, and testing will occur in the morning. More information about the IAR can be found HERE.

PTA All Day

Read-a-Thon
The Read-a-Thon ends today! Please be sure to log all reading by 10PM tonight. The donation portal and rewards store will be open until Sunday, 10/10. You can still register your readers today only at https://www.read-a-thon.com/readers/r/oekPPD.

We are so thankful for all who have signed up, logged minutes and donated to our first Read-a-Thon. The money we have raised will allow us to continue to bring fun, enriching PTA sponsored programs to our students. Thank you all for your support!

MemberHub/Directory
This year we switched from our old Membership Toolkit platform to MemberHub (which we can use at a substantial cost-savings). MemberHub will be where you purchase your PTA membership, fun lunches, etc and also will be used to sign up to volunteer at events (when that becomes an option).

One notable change between the two sites is that the directory on MemberHub is unfortunately less user friendly than the old site's directory. While we have been working with MemberHub to improve the functionality before rolling it out to you, we realize that this feature has really been missed by parents. We are working on an alternative way to deliver the directory, and will be sharing that (with PTA members only) in the next few weeks. Thank you for your patience!

PTA Memberships
Thank you to everyone who has purchased their Highland PTA membership - we now have over 245 members signed up for 2021-22! If you have yet to purchase your PTA membership and would like access to the directory mentioned above, please use this link to join us: https://highland58pta.memberhub.com/store.
