Principal Message
Dear Parents and Students,
Welcome to a new year! I hope everybody had a restful break and enjoyed a wonderful holiday. The first few months of school were filled with many exciting learning opportunities. We enjoyed Math Night, a joyful Kindergarten Holiday Program, and finished before break with a variety of holiday activities to spread Husky Cheer and Pride within our school and community.
In the second half of the year, there will be multiple opportunities for continued school and family engagement. Some events are Literacy Night, Spring PTO Dance, Spring Family Conferences, Missoula Children's Theatre, and more! PTO continues to meet monthly. We would love to have you there!
Behind the scenes, we have been progressing on meeting goals in our School Improvement Plan. Already, we have met our family enagagement goal and seek to far surpass it! We aspire to work in partnership with families to build our school community. By participating in our school events, helping your child to attend everyday, and conversing with your child about their learning, you help us meet our goals!
I would love to hear your ideas and feedback for making Hillside Elementary School the best elementary school in Southern Oregon. Please contact the school to schedule a meeting with me, call, or just drop me an email.
I wish you and your family a very Happy New Year!

PurposeFull People character traits for our students of the month
January 2024
Happy New Year! During the month of January, our Hillside staff will be celebrating scholars who demonstrate perseverance. We will focus on having a growth mindset, engaging in positive self-talk, and practicing grit - the ability to persevere through tough situations. We would encourage our families to practice this trait at home too!
Perseverance: pushing yourself to work through challenges and obstacles.
Think About It
Here are some questions to ask your child at home or talk about as a family:
K-2 Think about the story, “The Tortoise and the Hare” - how did the turtle show perseverance? Why do you think it’s important to keep on going, even when things get hard? What’s a challenge for you right now? What’s the hardest part? What are some resources – people, strategies, tools, inspiration – that could help you? What’s one step we can take together to overcome this challenge?
3-5 How did sticking to something show Perseverance? When have you decided not to stick with something? What happened? What did you learn? How, if at all, might you do that differently? What do you think the expression, “Go slow to go fast” means? How could you apply it to the last project you did?
