Important News from the TCS Board Meeting
Dr. Neill continued, "I want to thank everyone for their work in August and their countless hours of service in implementing unprecedented plans for reopening with new safety measures, social distancing and face coverings as the hallmarks of our back to school plans.
Schoology and Schools PLP are the hallmarks of equity and continuity in all options, with both programs being new and continually tweaked by the state department. We acknowledge that we are planning as we go, and if we had given more time to become totally familiar with these programs, we would still not be open. Changes seem to occur each week as new material is uploaded from the vendor.
Based on this enormous task of becoming familiar with a new learning management system for all of our teachers, and adjusting to new rules for health and safety, Trussville City Schools Board of Education approved:
1) A $500 supplement to all TCS employees payable in September as gratitude toward their efforts of doing whatever it took to get our students back in school. This meant extra training, extra hours of work and constant adjustments with student schedules during the month of August.
2) Teachers have requested more planning time and we have heard those requests. A revised calendar was approved with three additional teacher work days for teachers.
September 8, October 9 and April 23 are now additional teacher work days and schools will be closed those days for students. Principals will direct professional development, grading days, collaboration with virtual teachers or whatever might be needed on those days with no students present.
Dr. Neill continued, "We carry the torch of excellence in Trussville City Schools and I am so proud of everyone for the reopening efforts. Governor Ivey has not changed our health orders and the mask ordinance is still in effect until October 2, so in lockstep with the governor and the health department, we will continue our plans “as they are today” with everyone in place through September or until health orders change.
In addition to 3 teacher work days and a $500.00 supplement for employees, we have compiled a list of substitute teachers that will be available on designated days throughout the year on a rotating basis and by individual teacher application to cover classes while teachers grade papers, upload lessons, or reset their schedules.
Dr. Neill closed by thanking the Board of Education for wholeheartedly supporting and approving the $500 supplement and the three days of planning for faculty and staff.
