Heights Happenings
Winston Heights PS - Term 1, Week 10 2022
Principal's Message
What a term of wet weather we seem to be having! Nevertheless, we continue to focus on learning and ensuring our students are connecting, succeeding and thriving while at school. Each day teachers and students are working together to achieve learning goals. I hope you’ve had the opportunity to hear of the wonderful learning that takes place for your child while here at school. Below are some interesting questions you could ask your child to learn more about their school day and spark up a great conversation:
- What did you do today that made you proud?
- What did you learn about that you found interesting?
- What was the best part about today?
- What did you learn today that you did not know before?
- What happened today that you wished you could have changed?
- Why are you looking forward to going to school tomorrow?
We’ve all been there in the afternoon when you ask your child “what did you do today?” and you get “nothing”. I hope by asking some of these questions you and your child are able to have fantastic conversations about school life and hear of their wonderful achievements.
Cross Country Carnival
With yet another burst of rain this week our School Cross Country was postponed. We are now looking forward to a bright, sunshiny day on Tuesday 5 April so that the Cross Country can proceed. Students from Year 2 who are turning 8 this year have the option of joining Year 3, Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6 at the Cross Country to be held on school grounds. Parent/carers are welcome to attend, remaining COVID-Smart, to cheer on and celebrate student achievement. With COVID-19 still very much in the community, we kindly request that one parent/carer per child attend, COVID guidelines are adhered to, including remaining in the designated parent area.
K-2 Easter Hat Parade
Next week we will celebrate Easter with the K-2 (ES1 and Stage 1) Easter Hat Parade. All students are encouraged to create a decorative hat at home. I am always amazed and impressed by the children’s creations which demonstrate their creativity. The K-2 students and teachers are incredibly excited that we are able to proceed with the parade, but please understand some COVID restrictions will apply for parents.
- Parents will be seated in a designated area and are asked to remain seated at all times
- We ask that one parent/carer per child attend.
- Children will parade past the seated areas so you won’t miss any of the action.
What a fabulous day it will be!
NAPLAN
This year, students in Years 3 and 5 will participate in NAPLAN between May 9 - 20. Students at Winston Heights PS will complete this assessment online in 2022. As children progress through their school years, it is very important that checks are made along the way to see how well they are learning the essential skills of reading, writing and mathematics – skills that will set them upon the path to success as adults.
NAPLAN is a point-in-time assessment that allows parents to see how their child is progressing in literacy and numeracy against the national standard and compared with their peers throughout Australia. At the classroom level, NAPLAN provides additional information to support teachers’ professional judgement about student progress.
ACARA encourages students to participate in NAPLAN tests based on their needs. Adjustments are available in NAPLAN tests for students with disability to support students’ access to the tests.
Adjustments should reflect similar support and assistance provided in the classroom for assessment activities.
Some students with significant intellectual disability and/or students with significant coexisting conditions, which severely limit their capacity to participate in the tests, may be exempted from sitting the tests.
Parents of students should meet with their child’s teacher and discuss any adjustments that may be suitable for their child this term. No late applications can be considered by NESA.
Further information regarding the assessments can be found on link below:
Year 6 Fundraiser – Super Star Day!
On Monday 4 April the Year 6 are holding ‘Super Star Day’ Fundraiser. Students are encouraged to come to school dressed as their favourite star, this could be a sporting, movie or music star. Famous humanitarians and artists are also acceptable options for the day. Year 6 would love for you to support their fundraiser by contributing a gold coin donation on the day.

Term 1 Book Reviews - OLIVER Library
Are looking for a good school holiday read? Check out the book reviews posted by our talented students in OLIVER Library. So far students have reviewed 28 books this term!
This is a DIFFERENT kind of Tom Gates book. Tom's dad accidentally wrote his half-term holidays on the calendar for the wrong week! His dad is busy, and his mum has to go to work, so Tom needs to find ways to stay entertained and keep his creative mind flowing, so he has done LOTS of different craft and activities, that you can do too! It is full of cool craft activities to do like making a paper banger, and making a woolly monster, with instructions and pictures to show you how to do it. If you aren't going anywhere or doing anything these holidays (or even if you are), you should borrow this book to completely eliminate ANY chance of boredom! Matilda 6N
Alex rider is a great book for people who like action. It has tense scenes which makes this book even better! I would highly recommend this book for kids who enjoy books with call to action.
Cavan 5B
This book is about a boy named David. He is really naughty and doesn't listen to his mum. The pictures are very detailed, so it is fun to find all the unusual things, I recommend this book for Year 3 and under. Kaira 4N
Greg Heffley is starting middle school with his best friend Rowley. But little does Greg know that there are things to look out for like bathrooms with no doors, big bullies and worst of all, The Cheese. Hannah 6B
Commemorative Service in Honor of the ANZACS
Our annual commemorative service to honour the ANZACS will be held on Wednesday 27th April. This is the first day of Term 2 for students.
Students and staff will gather to remember and honour those who fought for our freedom.
As our Performance Band will be playing during the service, we ask that black band shirts are worn and all instruments are brought to school. The remainder of our students should be neatly dressed in their correct school uniform.
Each year we create beautiful floral wreaths for the service using shrubbery and flowers which you kindly donate from your gardens. We ask that those who have some flowers to share on the morning, have their child drop them in to the following classrooms at 8:30am so that the wreaths can be assembled before school. We greatly appreciate your contributions every year.
