MWISD Tuesday Tech Tip for Teachers
#4 - March 28, 2017
Math is one of the constant subjects throughout a student's education and we know that learning math is important as it is used throughout our lives and teaches problem solving abilities. However, we sometimes hear that math is not fun. This week's tech tips list some math tools or sites that can make math easier or more engaging.
The newsletters are archived on the web site linked at the bottom of the page for easy reference (a link to it is also on the main Technology Dept. web site).

Tech Tools for Math
- Desmos - Desmos is a powerful and free, online graphing calculator. Desmos can plot a variety of different equations, from lines to parabolas and more. It is available online (web), Chrome web app, and as a mobile app (IOS and Android). They have sections on the web site to learn how to use the calculator and sections for teachers about classroom activities.
- GeoBoard - GeoBoard is a tool for exploring a variety of mathematical topics introduced in the elementary and middle grades. Learners stretch bands around the pegs to form line segments and polygons and make discoveries about perimeter, area, angles, congruence, fractions, and more. It is available online (web), Chrome web app, and as a mobile app (IOS). Click the I icon in the bottom right for information on how to use GeoBoards.
- Money Pieces - Money pieces help students visualize and understand money values and relationships. Two versions of coins and bills are provided: virtual currency pieces that replicate the appearance and relative size of U.S. coins and the dollar bill, and area money pieces. It is available online (web), Chrome web app, and as a mobile app (IOS).
- Number line - Number line helps students visualize number sequences and illustrate strategies for counting, comparing, adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing. Choose number lines labelled with whole numbers, fractions, decimals, or negative numbers. It is available online (web), Chrome web app, and as a mobile app (IOS).
- Fractions - Fractions lets students use a bar or circle to represent, compare, and perform operations with fractions with denominators from 1 to 100. Choose the fraction model and number of equal parts. Use a color to select specific parts to show a fraction of the whole. It is available online (web), Chrome web app, and as a mobile app (IOS).
- Pattern Shapes - Pattern Shapes is used to explore geometry and fractions, create their own designs, or filling in outlines. As they work with shapes, students think about angles, investigate symmetry, and compose and decompose larger shapes. It is available online (web), Chrome web app, and as a mobile app (IOS).
- Number Frames - Number frames help students structure numbers to 5, 10, 20, and 100. Students use the frames to count, represent, compare, and compute with numbers in a particular range. It is available online (web), Chrome web app, and as a mobile app (IOS).
- Number rack - Number rack facilitates the natural development of children’s number sense. Rows of movable, colored beads encourage learners to think in groups of fives and tens, helping them to explore and discover a variety of addition and subtraction strategies. It is available online (web), Chrome web app, and as a mobile app (IOS).
- Number pieces - Number pieces helps students develop a deeper understanding of place value while building their computation skills with multi-digit numbers. Students use the pieces to represent multi-digit numbers, regroup, add, subtract, multiply, and divide. It is available online (web), Chrome web app, and as a mobile app (IOS).
- Get the Math - Get the Math is about algebra in the real world. See how professionals use math in music, fashion, videogames, restaurants, basketball, and special effects. Then take on interactive challenges related to those careers.
