Happy Friday Selby Families!
There was a schedule change for Mrs. Sutcliffe and Mr. Scott. Each of these teachers does planning time for our classes but due to some scheduling conflicts, they have switched the classes they teach. Thus, Mr. Scott will do all of the planning time for Ms. Argyle and Mrs. Taylor and Mrs. Sutcliffe will do all of our other classes from grades 1 -8.
This week we held our annual Terry Fox fundraiser - it was a great event! Together, Selby PS raised over $2000. Wow! Thank you to Mrs. Sutcliffe for organizing and to all of our families for their support.
Thank you to Mrs. Wagar and Mrs. McCutcheon for taking our intermediate soccer players to the tournament this week - the students did amazing!
Our running club will continue to practice with Mrs. Feenstra and Mme Heather coaching. They are getting ready for their final event on October 16 @ Fort Henry.
On Monday, September 30th, we are encouraging students and staff to wear an orange shirt. Orange Shirt Day is in recognition of First Nations students at residential schools across Canada. Orange Shirt Day was inspired by Phyllis Jack Webstad, a Stswecem'c Xgat'tem First Nation elder in Williams Lake, B.C., and by her first day at residential school in 1973, when she was six. Schools in the Limestone District School Board will recognize this day in support of the Truth and Reconciliation Committee's Calls to Action in support of residential school survivors and their families. Teachers will be sharing this message in age appropriate ways including reading mentor texts written by Indigenous authors that share a message of kindness, acceptance, inclusion and reconciliation. We will promote the message that Every Child Matters in a small step towards reconciliation.
Lastly, we plan to join us on October 1 from 5:30- 7:00 for our OPEN HOUSE. We will have a BBQ with hot dogs and hamburgers (veggie burgers, too!) for you to purchase (CASH ONLY) so you don't even have to cook dinner that night. We can't wait to see you! If you are interested in volunteering, please contact the school.
In regard to CUPE job action, please look for another message with communication from the Board. As always, we remain committed to the safety and well-being of all of our students.
Thank you for your continued support!

Improving concussion prevention, education and treatment – keeping students safe.
Rowan’s Law Day is a day to engage students, staff, coaches, and parents/guardians in activities that increase awareness about concussions and to share Rowan Stringer’s story. It was recognized this year on September 25, 2019.
The Limestone District School Board (LDSB) has strict concussion protocols and concussion management procedures including having a return to school and return to physical activity plan for any student who has a concussion.
LDSB, in close partnership with KFL&A Public Health and the Ontario Physical & Health Education Association, continue to provide schools and families with information around concussion protocols on prevention and identification.
Families can access the following resources on concussion awareness:

About Rowan:
Rowan Stringer loved rugby. A competitive and keen athlete, she was captain of her high school’s team. Tragically, in May 2013, 17-year old Rowan died as the result of head injuries she sustained while playing rugby. In the week before her last game, Rowan was hit twice while playing, likely sustaining a concussion after each blow. Her concussions went unreported, and she continued to play. Rowan suspected something wasn’t right—she texted a friend about her condition and used Google to search for information about concussions. When she was hit again in her final game, Rowan suffered what is known as Second Impact Syndrome—catastrophic swelling caused by a second injury to a brain still healing from previous trauma. Rowan collapsed on the field on May 8, 2013, and died four days later.

EQAO Results
This month, parents and guardians will receive their child’s Individual Student Report (ISR). This report contains their child’s results from the Assessments of Reading, Writing and Mathematics, Primary and Junior Divisions, administered in spring 2019. These results did not impact students’ report cards last year.
EQAO results offer an independent snapshot that shows whether students are meeting literacy and math expectations from The Ontario Curriculum. In receiving the ISR, there is an opportunity for parents and guardians to have discussions about their child’s achievement within their family or with a teacher (e.g., parent/guardian-teacher interview).
EQAO data should be considered alongside other information—such as in-class assessment results, report-card grades and teacher observations—so parents and guardians can build a fuller understanding of their child’s learning.
Parents and guardians can learn more about assessment results through EQAO’s website (www.eqao.com)
