On Pentecost Sunday, we remember the day the disciples received the Holy Spirit in a special way. The story in Acts 2 describes a powerful wind and tongues of fire as the Holy Spirit was poured out on people from all over the world who came to Jerusalem to celebrate a Jewish feast. At the first Pentecost over 3,000 people were baptized, creating the first church. This is why Pentecost is known as the birthday of the Church.

Red is the color historically associated with the celebration of Pentecost. It is a visual reminder of the ‘tongues of fire’ that empowered the disciples and their followers to proclaim the Good News in different languages. Because of this, we encourage everyone to wear red when you come to worship.

During the worship service, we will celebrate the Sacrament of Holy Communion. All are invited to receive the grace of God.

• For those worshipping onsite: You will be invited to receive communion at one of four stations, with bread and individual cups of grape juice. A gluten-free option will be available. If you are unable to come to a communion station, you will be served in the pews.
• For those worshipping online: Before viewing the worship service, please have your elements ready in preparation for the sharing of the Sacrament. Look through your own kitchen to find bread and beverage. While there is rich symbolism in the elements we traditionally use to celebrate the Lord’s Supper, the Church also has a long history of using the most fitting materials that are readily available in any given time and setting. Be creative and use what you have on hand. God always takes what is ordinary and makes it extraordinary.

We will also be honoring our high school graduates: Katie Gerovac, Morgan Roberts, Zander Roberts and Maggie Ross. We will offer a special graduation blessing and many prayers for the next chapter in their lives. Congratulations to Morgan Roberts and Maggie Ross on receiving college scholarships from the Wisconsin United Methodist Foundation.

We will also give thanks to those actively involved in forming faith for our children and youth with a special teacher appreciation recognition. We will acknowledge teachers, shepherds, Christmas program directors, retreat chaperones and more!

Special music during our Pentecost worship service will be provided by the Children’s Choir of Waukesha, under the direction of Diane Skrobis.

Following worship, we will have a Pentecost Party during Fellowship Time in the Asbury Room. This will include preparing for our intergenerational summer project: Flat Jesus! Everyone will receive a paper cutout of Jesus. He’ll need to be decorated using markers or crayons. If you wish, your Flat Jesus can be laminated (this makes him more durable for his summer adventures). Then you’ll take Jesus with you for the summer: to the park, going out to dinner, enjoying a baseball game, having fun on vacation, hanging out with friends and family. This is a great reminder that Jesus is always with us, wherever we go. Take pictures of Flat Jesus and his adventures and share them with the church by bringing in hard copies or submitting them digitally HERE. A Flat Jesus template will also be posted on our website soon.

FUMC started the year with a shortfall of $77,000. During the six weeks of the season of Easter – April 18 to May 29 – we encouraged giving to a special spring appeal to raise funds to close this gap.

This fascinating book tells the story of Derek Black who grew up emersed in white nationalism. As the godson of David Duke, he was groomed for leadership in the movement. Attending college and learning from friends who did not give up on him, Derek eventually renounced white nationalism. As white nationalism continues to grow in our country, this book offers insight as well as hope.

Now What? How to Move Forward When We’re Divided (About Basically Everything)

Holland and Silvers offer ideas about engaging with our family, friends, church,

community, politics, government, and social media in ways that lessen frustration,

anxiety, and fear. These two women with different political views also host a podcast as

they seek a future of connection, hope, and love, even with all our differences.

During the summer months of June, July and August, FUMC will hold a Wednesday morning Bible Study, 9:30 – 11am, in Room 216.

Depending on interest and availability, the class may be extended into the fall months.

What will we study: the lectionary readings for the upcoming Sunday.

What to bring: your favorite Bible (the experience is much more interesting when we are able to read from different translations), an open mind, and a willingness to listen to a variety of theological perspectives.

At this time, Bible Study will only be offered onsite and in-person. We will reevaluate at the end of the summer to determine if an on-line option will be available for the future. Thank you for your understanding and your patience.

Forming Faith opportunities will continue this summer with Living Faith Today (Sundays @ 10:30 am) and Men’s Breakfast (2nd Sunday @ 10:30 am). Children’s Sunday School, Youth Group and Family Conversations will resume in the Fall. The Nursery will be staffed and available all summer.

Don’t schedule doctor appointments, vacations, walks in the park, shopping etc. when you can be with all your friends and be entertained by our own Tony Linz as he delights us with “Maine Songs and Stories”. The potluck starts at 12 noon! Looking forward to seeing all of you!

Twenty-eight people from FUMC have participated in an initial information session about being a refugee resettlement co-sponsor with Lutheran Social Services. We are excited to have enough interested people to go forward with the process. The next step is to solidify a team of approximately 15 individuals committed to a 6-month co-sponsorship. Anyone who is interested in being a part of the team must contact Anjana Jones at anjana.jones@med.ge.com by June 1, AND if you have not already attended an information session, you must attend a Zoom session on June 7 at 6:30 pm.

This music scholarship is in memory of Judge David Dancey (1917-2008). Waukesha knew him as a family man, a veteran of World War II, a district attorney, assemblyman, and county court judge. FUMC knew him as a music lover. He was a long-time member of the Chancel Choir and was featured in a Sunday morning radio hour when worship services were broadcast in Waukesha. We are pleased to remember Judge Dancey and invest in music students in this way.

Much thanks to Gary Sampson, Greg Carpenter, Veronica Radowicz and Cynthia Eisenmann for being a part of the audition process. They were impressed with the quality of the musicianship of the students auditioning and chose three candidates to receive a $500 scholarship each. The monies provided are to be used to further study and growth as musicians. Congratulations to these Waukesha students:

FUMC will have the joy and honor of hearing the music of the Dancey Scholarship recipients in worship this summer.

Hospitality is a spiritual discipline. It’s one of the ways the Church expresses love for Christ and our neighbor, through intentional acts of invitation and service. Following Jesus includes following his practice of hospitality: joyous, authentic, generous, and hope-filled hospitality. There are no strangers in God’s house. Might you join FUMC in the ministry of hospitality for in-person Sunday gatherings by signing up to be a GREETER, provide FLOWERS, organize FELLOWSHIP TIME (coffee after worship), read SCRIPTURE, serve COMMUNION (on the first Sunday of each month)?

Wisconsin Annual Conference Ingathering 2022 will be collecting donations for Home Care and Personal Dignity Kits for Midwest Mission Distribution Center. Items can be placed in the designated boxes located in the main hallway by June 5.

FUMC uses a company called Subsplash for our website, app and livestreaming needs. Recently, Subsplash has had issues with streaming through YouTube. The staff has been trying to rectify this problem for weeks. If there is ever an issue on any of the viewing platforms (YouTube and Facebook), please visit our website or app. The livestream of our services is best viewed there. The tech team and staff put in a lot of time and effort to make the livestreams as seamless as possible. Unfortunately, there are times when technical difficulties occur that are out of our control. If you do have issues viewing the service, please let us know. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work through these issues. Pine Lake and Lake Lucerne offer camps for people of all ages and interests. FUMC helps send kids to camp by offering scholarships for up to half the cost of camp. To get a scholarship, please fill out this FORM and return it to the church office or Pastor Greta. If there is greater financial need, there may also be help from the conference. Please offer prayers for Rev. Don Fenner and family as they grieve the passing of Pastor Fenner’s wife, Norma, who died peacefully on May 22. Pastor Fenner served as FUMC’s lead pastor, 1979-1986. In his retirement, he returned to FUMC as Minister of Seniors, 2009-2012. Condolences can be sent to Pastor Fenner at 321 Highland Park Ave, #122, Green Bay WI, 54302. A private memorial service will take place later this summer. Memorials in Norma’s name may be directed to Lake Lucerne Camp in Neshkoro.
