In the Classroom

It's going to be a fun week and a half in first grade! We are celebrating Thanksgiving through literature, writing, and a feast! On Friday, your child brought home a letter explaining our First Grade Friendship Feast on Tuesday, November 24th at 2:00 in the cafeteria. In the letter you will find more details and the item your child requested to bring to our feast. Please send in feast items on Monday, November 23. Parents are welcome to help with this event! We hope to see you there!

Learning This Week

Word Work- This week's sight words are: be, so how, first, next. This week's word pattern is -ow (how, now, cow, wow, brow, chow, sow, etc.)

Reading- This week students will deepen our learning of fiction comprehension skills and strategies, such as wondering, predicting, and finding the central message in a story. All first grade students must be able to distinguish between fiction and nonfiction by the end of first grade.

Writing- This week students will focus on writing how to stories to teach peers how to do or make something! Students will learn the importance of time order words like: first, then, next, and last to help put directions in order.

Math- Students will begin exploring how to find a missing addend (ex: 7 + ___= 10) and subtraction strategies. By the end of first grade, students should be able to fluently add within 1-10 and have strategies to subtract within 1-20.

Science- This week students are learning the history and traditions of Thanksgiving, past and present.

Last week's class attendance: 96.08%

Our attendance goal for Sweeny is 96% or higher attendance. In our classroom, we are trying to earn an attendance celebration. Every day that we have 100% attendance we earn a letter. When we spell "perfect attendance," we will celebrate! "If you're not at school, you're not learning!"
