Heritage Week 2018
Our second annual Heritage Week celebration will be held November 12 - 16. This year's theme is Leaving a Legacy and we will all be thinking about how we can leave our legacy here at LHS.
The video link below is one from our final speaker of the week, Mike Smith. Mike will do two motivational assemblies on Friday morning, 11/16. Every student and every staff member at LHS will be able to hear his presentation. It's going to be a GREAT week!
Family Game Night
As part of our Heritage Week celebration, we will once again be hosting a Family Game Night. The event will be held on Wednesday, November 14 from 6 to 8 p.m. We invite you and your family out for this fun, bonding activity. Pizza will be provided. So that we can adequately prepare, we ask that you complete this RSVP form. We want to make sure we order enough pizza!!
Logging Volunteer Hours
If you or anyone you know donate volunteers hours for our school, please remember to report them via the electronic volunteer reporting form. We have so many folks giving of their time and we want to be able to recognize their volunteer efforts at the end of the school year. You can access the volunteer reporting form here.
Federal Cards
On October 29, 2018, your student will bring home a Federal Impact Aid Program Survey Card. Federal Impact Aid is a program that provides funding from the federal government to local school districts for students:
• Who are connected to a military family;
• Who live in military or government housing communities; and/or
• Whose families work on federal properties.
Please complete the Federal Impact Aid Program Survey Card. Directions are located on the back of the card. Please sign and date the card and return as soon as possible. Information provided will be treated confidentially. Thank you for your cooperation with this very important process!
Release of Directory Information
State law and City of Virginia Beach School Board Policy 5-66 allow the release of high school junior and senior directory information to representatives of the military for recruiting purposes. Directory information may include the student's name, address, telephone listing, date of birth, and other similar information; however, Virginia Beach City Public Schools provides only name, address, telephone listing, school, and grade level. This information will be available for release on December 11, 2018, to representatives of the military.
A parent may deny the school permission to release the directory information for a student. If you wish to deny the release of such information, you must complete the tear-off portion of this letter and return it to Mrs. Muench in the main office on or before December 3, 2018. If you have not notified the school by that time, the mailing information will be available for release to representatives of the military.
News from NHS
The National Honor Society is having a wonderful start to the new school year. Last June, members volunteered to help at the Virginia Beach sand soccer tournament and the LHS class of 2018 graduation. With the event of Hurricane Florence, members collected a truck full of items ranging from water bottles to diapers to pet food to be sent to North Carolina to assist victims of this tragedy. As we head into fall, our members are eagerly volunteering at community events such as elementary school fall festivals, literacy nights, movie nights and family dance night. And once again, the NHS peer tutoring program has begun. Students wishing to get help in the core subject areas may join us in room 133 during one lunch. We are so excited for the rest of the year. Virtual Learning Day--November 6
November 6 will be our second of three virtual learning days in the division. Announced this year, Virtual Learning Days are not only a way for the school division to build in time to the school calendar, but they also grow students' capacity for independent learning while utilizing online resources. In fact, since 2013, students in Virginia have been required to successfully complete at least one virtual course to help prepare students for college and career opportunities after high school.
Students will be provided assignments that are designed to replicate learning experiences that would happen if the students were in school. The work may be completed on the Virtual Learning Day or over a designated 10-day window of time in order to give flexibility for students and families. Families should note that these assignments are also designed in such a way that they can be completed either online or using paper and pencil at home, depending on the student's preference and/or need. Additionally, teachers will be given an hour of time during the day specifically designated to answer any emails or questions from students about their assignments. For more information about Virtual Learning Days, visit this press release.
