The WAVA Wave
January 2017
A Message from our Principal...
Dear WAVA Families -
Happy New Year! I hope that you have all enjoyed a restful and happy holiday season with your loved ones! We all need time to rest and recharge the batteries and I was very happy to have some time with my family and friends. Now I am ready to jump into the New Year with both feet and hope you are too!
The month of January is particularly short with the Martin Luther King Holiday on Jan 16th and required MAP mid-year testing the week of Jan 23 - Jan 27. That leaves us only 13 regular class days left in the semester! It is so important for our students to make every day meaningful from now until the end of the semester. Please make sure to review each course calendar and due dates to make sure that all work is turned in on time to be graded for the semester. Students –make sure to reach out to teachers for any additional support to finish the semester strong!
First semester report cards will be snail mailed from the WAVA office the week of Feb 6th and our new semester starts on Monday, January 30th!
Wishing you a very happy and productive January!

Counselor Connect
Social Media and Cyberbullying
Online interactions through social media websites (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, etc.) are an important part of the social experience for many students at WAVA. The desire to connect with peers is a normal and healthy part of adolescence, and appropriate use of social media can have numerous positive effects such as increased communication with peers, improved access to information, and the development of a sense of self. However, there is also potential for some very serious issues to arise when students are left unsupervised on social media.
Here is a link to an article with some very helpful suggestions to help parents raise internet-savvy children:

K12 Family & Student Programs Begin National College & Career Workshops
It’s never too early - or too late – for our students to start exploring college and career options. K12 offers a robust schedule of sessions for the 2016-2017 school year. Workshop sessions take place twice a month to offer students and families a chance to talk about college and career prep topics.
Staff and Families can access the more details, and workshop schedules by visiting: http://www.k12start.com/high-school/college-and-career/
8th Grade College Exploration Days
Below are the 2017 dates and contacts for the Washington Council 8th Grade College Exploration Days. Please note sites have limited capacity and we may not be able to accommodate all requests.
This popular, high-energy event stresses to eighth-grade students the need to take control and make the best use of their high school experience. Our goal is that each student will develop the mindset they will attend college. Students participate in individual tracks that take them through a series of group sessions. These sessions are designed to show why high school is important and how to get involved with the many opportunities available in higher education.
If you are a Washington middle school teacher or counselor who is interested in bringing your students to an 8th Grade Exploration Day, please contact the Site Coordinator of the location you wish to attend.
