Parent/Teacher Communication

Building a Strong Parent-Teacher Partnership
What makes the difference in how your child performs in school? The answer might surprise you. It’s not your child’s IQ, the teacher, the school, or your educational level. Although all of these play a part, study after study tells the same story. Children who do best in school have parents who are actively involved in their child’s education. One of the best ways to get involved is continue building a strong parent-teacher partnership.
I ask that you come prepared to your communication conference with questions and information that will help both you and the teacher strengthen the team effort you share educating your child.
We look forward to seeing all of you during conferences!
Thank you.

Picture Retake Day - Friday, November 4th
Did your smile look crooked? Did your eyes shut down? Did your hair stand up? Was the camera flash too bright? Did you forget your picture money? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you may have your school pictures retaken on Friday, November 4th. Return your whole picture package to Miss Wendelin. If you were absent on picture day or didn't get your picture taken, please let Miss Wendelin know so your picture can be included in the yearbook!
Football Games
We are encountering problems at our Varsity Football Games at Westside High School involving our students. Specifically, we have noticed an increasing number of elementary and/or middle school students unaccompanied and/or unsupervised during and after games. This last week, our staff and security noted a group of younger students together in our parking lot more than 30 minutes after the stands had emptied; needless to say, it was concerning to see a group of 10-13 year olds, alone, at 10pm on a Friday night.
This is creating safety concerns, as well as crowd control and behavioral issues for our security, staff members, and other students and families. While we encourage our younger students to attend games, whether football, softball, basketball, etc., we remind you they must be accompanied and supervised by an adult. In addition, we remind all students they are expected to sit/stay in the stands to watch the game and not congregate near concession stands and restrooms.
Thank you for your support in helping Westside High to be a welcoming and safe place for all of our fans, student athletes and visitors.

Halloween Parade and Trick-or-Treat in the Park
Halloween Parade- Friday, October 28th!
halloween reminder-fun and friendly costumes, please!
Please remember we ask that costumes be on the fun and friendly side, free of scary or frightening masks, or clothing with no blood, gore, or weapons. Please reserve make-up for evening activities. Students should bring their costumes at the beginning of the school day. Thanks for honoring this request.
Veterans' Day Celebration
Please join us in honoring our Swanson Community Veterans this Veterans Day with a reverse Veterans Day Parade on Friday, November 11th from 10:30-10:50 am! Please invite your family members, neighbors, and friends who are past and current service men and women of all branches of our Armed Services to join us on this special day. Our students and staff will be lining the Swanson parking lot and drive to welcome our honorees as they drive through our cue.
On this day all members of the Swanson Community of Learners will be wearing red, white, and blue. Please talk with your Superstar about the veterans who may be in your family or circle of friends to invite them to our special event!
In order to thank our service men and women, Swanson students would like to send personalized thank you notes to Veterans. Please help us by clicking on the link below to fill out a form providing the name and address of a Veteran by Wednesday, November 2nd. We will then send a thank you note via U.S. Post to the identified current or former service member. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1y7iOJLbrKHBnUIh6etEYf5fqf22sT6pt9rJv_Rg8JPM/edit.
Thank you for your assistance in keeping Swanson's long standing traditions of celebrating and thanking our veterans.

Unity Day
The month of October is Bullying Prevention Month. To celebrate this, Swanson Elementary will be participating in Unity Day on Wednesday, October 19th. Unity Day is a day when people come together in one giant message of support. The call to action is simple: wear and share the color ORANGE. The goal of the day is to bring together youth, parents, educators, and others across the nation to emphasize the message that bullying is not acceptable and that all students deserve to be safe in school, online, and in the community. Swanson staff will be participating by wearing orange to school on October 19th and we encourage all students to do the same! Students will be completing additional activities at school to continue the message of bullying prevention and being united for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion. If you have any questions, please reach out to Mrs. Denton, our school psychologist.
