Land Acknowledgement
The Mukilteo School District acknowledges that we gather on the ancestral homelands of the Coast Salish Peoples, who have lived in the Salish Sea basin since time immemorial. We respect this place and honor the sacred spiritual connection to the land, water, and its people, past, present, and future. The district serves a diverse population of about 15,000 students who live near the Puget Sound about 15 miles north of Seattle. Dedicated staff help prepare our community's children to be successful, contributing members of the community. Our students learn in an environment that is positive, caring, and focused on their highest academic potential.

Important Health and Safety Reminders
If your student exhibits symptoms at school that are not attributed to a chronic condition, they may be sent to the health room and sent home during the day. So please keep them at home until they are feeling better.
For more information, please visit Health / When Your Student is Sick (schoolwires.net)
For free rapid antigen and PCR COVID tests visit: https://www.mukilteoschools.org/Page/15966
Please contact Attendance when your student needs to stay home: (425) 366-5300 or contact the School Nurse for more information.
Attendance Awareness
Good attendance helps children do well in school and in the workplace.
Good attendance matters for school success, starting as early as prekindergarten and throughout elementary school. By middle and high school, poor attendance is a leading indicator of dropout. Developing the habit of attendance prepares students for success on the job and in life.
Additionally, please be mindful about scheduling appointments outside of the school day whenever possible, or to bring students back to campus so that they miss as little school as possible.
Pre-Arranged Absences
To request a pre-arranged absence, please complete the Middle School Pre-arranged Absence Form, print, sign and submit to Voyager’s front office.
For questions regarding attendance guidelines please review Mukilteo School Board policy #3122P for more details or contact Voyager’s front office at (425) 366-5300.

National Family Week
National Family Week in the United States takes place the week of Thanksgiving. It was first proclaimed by Richard Nixon in 1972 pursuant to a resolution introduced in Congress by Representative John Myers upon the suggestion of a constituent, Sam Wiley.
The aim of National Families Week is to celebrate the vital role that families play in our society. It is a time to celebrate the meaning of family and to make the most of family life.
Let’s take the time to reflect on the critical role that families play in teaching, supporting and nurturing children especially as they grow.

November is National American Indian Heritage Month
November is Native American Heritage Month, also referred to as American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month. The month is a time to celebrate rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native people.
Heritage Month is also an opportune time to educate the general public about tribes, to raise awareness about the unique challenges Native people have faced both historically and in the present, and the ways in which tribal citizens have worked to overcome these challenges. Join us in honoring the past and celebrating the future.
Visit National Native American Heritage Month to learn more.

Weekly Tips
Meaningful responsibilities help middle schoolers thrive
Fulfilling responsibilities
at home helps middle schoolers see themselves as capable people. This feeling of confidence serves middle school students well in school and in life.
Some children are ready for certain tasks before others are. Take your child’s development into account, then consider giving responsibility for:
- Scheduling. Have your child make hair appointments, RSVP to social events and keep track of extracurricular activities. Encourage your child to mark them on the family calendar and then coordinate transportation to and from activities with you.
- Budgeting. Middle schoolers can manage some expenses. If your child wants to buy something, make a plan. Ask, “How much will you have to save? What jobs can you do to reach your goal?”
- Solving problems. Ask your child to participate in discussions about issues that affect family life. You’ll still make the final decisions, but ask for your child’s opinion and consider it. Asking children to contribute ideas helps them feel valued and understood.
- Contributing. Expect your child to pitch in during family projects and with household chores.
“If you want children to keep their feet on the ground, put some responsibility on their shoulders.
—Pauline Phillips aka Abigail Van Buren
Are you helping your child resist peer pressure?
Peer influence is strong in the middle school years. Are you doing all you can to help your child reject negative peer pressure? Answer yes or no to the questions below to find out:
- Have you talked with your child about doing the right thing rather than the easy thing?
- Do you suggest ways to say no to risky behavior? Your child could say “I’m not interested” and walk away.
- Do you talk to your child about how most middle schoolers feel pressured to fit in, too?
- Do you make your family rules clear? Do you emphasize that your child can always talk to you when feeling pressured to break a rule?
- Do you encourage your child to think about consequences? “If you skip school with your friends, what might happen as a result?”
How well are you doing?
If most of your answers were yes, you are helping your child resist negative peer pressure. For no answers, try those ideas.
