EUSD Community Newsletter
Winter 2020 Edition
A Message from Our Superintendent
Welcome to 2020 in Encinitas Union School District! 20/20 is symbolic of a well-focused, clear vision. As we start this new year, EUSD is focusing on ways to continuously improve the educational opportunities we provide our students in this next chapter of our story. We know that starts with reflecting on where we have been, where we are now and where we need to go.
In reflecting back on our 2019 story, we recognize some of the great accomplishments to support our students learning in the district:
- District-wide implementation of K-6 Social and Emotional Learning Instruction (T.R.A.C.)
- Opening of our two new, state of the art district-wide Research and Design Studios at Farm Lab
- District-wide implementation of new, pilot mathematics resources
- Increased professional development in the areas of mathematics and science
- District provided Next Generation Science units and training for all teachers
- CA Dashboard Ratings of Blue (or the highest level) in English Language Arts and Mathematics
- Increased gains in Language Arts and Language Acquisition for our English Learners
- Implementation of Newcomer support via Newcomer Academies
- Implementation of many new sustainability products and practices including steam weed abatement, chemical free, electrostatic cleaners for disinfecting spaces, and battery-operated leaf blowers
- Increased emphasis on personalized learning for students as we recognize their stories and work to engage learners to content with their unique needs and abilities in mind
- District-wide purchase of Raptor Visitor Management Safety System
We recognize that learning in 2020 and beyond must be forward thinking as we are preparing students for a more technologically advanced and globally connected world. As we begin 2020, we are moving ahead with creating a district-wide comprehensive Facilities Master Plan. Students must have learning spaces and environments that are world class and meet the needs of the whole child. We will be working with LPA Design Studios over the next six months to review how our spaces are maintained and utilized, and to consider how we can best address district educational goals for the future. Each site and each space will be reviewed with stakeholder input to establish a clear vision for what we want our educational environment to be for our students in the next three, five and ten years. We look forward to engaging our families, community and staff in this process as we create the roadmap for the next chapters of EUSD together.
Along with the District’s forward momentum, our team of professionals continues to stay focused on knowing each child and their stories, strengths and gifts. This personalized approach ensures that we provide the best educational program possible.
Thank you for the continued support you provide to our students and our sites. I would like to personally invite you to join me at one of my three mid-year Superintendent Coffee Chats happening in January! I look forward to conversations and hearing from you.
Happy New Year!
Warmly,
Andrée Grey, Ed.D.

ASPIRE Enrollment for the 2020-21 School Year
ASPIRE registration for the 2020-21 school year will open on February 3, 2020. Please note, due to the high volume of enrollment at the beginning of the school year, all registrations submitted after 8/11/2020 will not be eligible to start until 8/24/2020.
All returning students must register each school year. On or after February 3, 2020, you may register online at www.eusd.net/enrichment or submit a hard copy registration form, which can be found in the front offices and ASPIRE classrooms. All current balances must be paid in order to register. A $35 non-refundable registration fee is required upon submission. Please register early to ensure that your child has a spot for the next school year, as some schools reach capacity quickly and require a waitlist to be utilized.

Implementation of the Raptor Visitor Management System
EUSD is pleased to announce that we will be implementing the Raptor Visitor Management System to strengthen our program of campus safety for students and faculty. This type of system was strongly requested by parents, has successfully been used in other districts and most recently piloted at Mission Estancia, and was endorsed by our local law enforcement. Encinitas Union School District is providing the system and all necessary related materials for all schools in the district. Part of keeping students and faculty safe is knowing who is in our buildings at all times, and the Raptor system will allow us to do that. The Raptor system will better allow us to screen visitors, contractors, and volunteers in our schools and provide us with a safer environment for our students and staff.
In February, visitors will be asked to present an ID such as a Driver’s License, which can either be scanned or manually entered into the system. The Raptor system will check to ensure that registered sexual offenders are not entering our school campuses without our knowledge. Once entry is approved, Raptor will issue a badge that identifies the visitor, the date, and the purpose of his/her visit. A visitor’s badge will not be necessary for those who visit our schools simply to drop off an item in the office or pick up paperwork.
The safety of our students is our highest priority and the Raptor visitor management system will provide additional protection at all sites.
Farm Lab News...
Did you hear?
We finally have chickens and roosters on the farm!
The new Research and Design spaces are open! Now teachers can bring their classes to Farm Lab multiple times each year for their own projects. Robotics? Nutrition science? The possibilities are endless!
All first graders visited the DREAMS Campus in December to learn different ways plants help us. They helped us organically solve our various pest problems by planting calendulas and coding Ozobots to scare off bunnies and squirrels before they ate our school lunch produce!
Season 3 of Salad Wars is here! All EUSD 6th graders will spend an entrepreneurial week at Farm Lab over the next few months developing an organic salad dressing company and marketing plan. Best of luck to all of them at Salad Wars!
Weekly Volunteer Day Added in Encinitas!
Join us every Saturday 10am-12pm!
The Ecology Center is so pleased to announce a new weekly volunteer opportunity at our Encinitas location. Every Saturday from 10am-12pm, we will be hosting a volunteer shift. Join us at The Ecology Center at Farm Lab (441 Quail Gardens Dr, 92024) and help us create an ecological oasis and abundant, organic farm. At our Saturday volunteer days we will be raking, mulching, planting, harvesting, weeding, composting, taking care of our new chickens, and so much more! We are excited to build our Encinitas community and get our hands in the soil!
If you are interested in receiving a weekly volunteer email, please sign-up on our volunteer webpage under Encinitas Sign Up! Once you are receiving our weekly volunteer email, you can RSVP to our Saturday sessions (which are currently open to 12 people!) At this time, we ask that all volunteers are at least 12 years of age.
