Citizens Making Choices

Madison Fraser

Thesis Statement

  • The citizens should create the rules for the members in the community based on individuality and personal safety.

Summary: The Most Dangerous Game

In "The Most Dangerous Game" by Richard Connell, Rainsford has to fight for his life against General Zaroff who is the owner of "Ship Trap Island" in a man vs. man hunting game. The story starts with Rainsford falling off his Yacht and having to swim for land. He ends on the General's island and when he approaches the door asking for food and directions, Rainsford is forced to play a 3 day/night hunting game on the island against General Zaroff. If Rainsford goes 3 days/nights without being found and killed by the General, he can leave the island. "If I find him "--the general smiled--" he loses"(Connell 11).

Summary: Harrison Bergeron

In "Harrison Bergeron" by Curt Vonnegut, the handy cap general gives each person a handy cap to make them all equal. For example, Harrison Bergeron; the main character in the story, he had to wear handy caps that make him, shorter, less attractive, and less intelligent. Nobody wanted the handy caps especially Harrison so he took them off and went to prison. Because he didn't agree with the prison punishment, he broke out of his cell and ended up getting shot and killed.

“And George, while his intelligence was way above normal, had a little mental handicap radio in his ear. He was required by law to wear it at all times” (Vonnegut 1).

This quote is telling the reader that George has to wear a transmitter by law and if he took it off, there would be consequences. It shows that the government is controlling him because he has to wear the transmitter and the handy cap General is in control of what George hears. This supports my thesis because George should be able to be an individual and make the choice whether or not he wants to wear the transmitter.

"’Oh,’ said the general, ‘I give him his option, of course. He need not play that game if he doesn't wish to. If he does not wish to hunt, I turn him over to Ivan’” (Connell 9).

This quote is hinting at General Zaroff as a controlling figure because he is forcing anyone who finds the island to play a hunting game. If they do not want to play the hunting game, they are forced to go to Ivan; a gigantic man who rips off the limbs of any unwilling hunters. This supports my thesis because it is showing that the government is being to controlling and that people should be allowed to make an individual choice to protect their personal safety and not be punished.

Character Profile: Harrison Bergeron

Harrison Bergeron was a very intelligent, tall, handsome man. He had to wear handy-caps to change his looks and make him average like everyone else. Harrison had to wear 300lb of scrap metal on his back to make him shorter, he had to shave off his eyebrows and wear a clown nose to make him less attractive, and a transmitter in his ear to make him less intelligent.

Character Profile: General Zaroff

General Zaroff is an experienced and very talented hunter. He grew up hunting big, scary animals like bears, mountain lions, and other big cats. As General got older, hunting thses animals began to get boring, so he started hunting humans and hanging their heads on his walls as trophies. The General lives on an island in the middle of the ocean called "Ship Trap Island" and if anyone comes onto the island, General Zaroff forces them to play his hunting game. His victim has to survive 3 days and nights without being found by Zaroff. They are armed with a knife, a 3 hour head start, and hunting clothes. If the opponent is not found by the General in the 3 days/nights, they get to leave the island, but if the general finds them, their head belongs to him.

This article relates to my thesis because it talks about how laws are made and also how the government wants more say from the community members on what the laws are.

This article relates to my thesis because it is talking about the government wanting to make laws so that violence doesn't affect as many people as it already does.

I think that the community members should make laws for themselves based on individuality and personal safety because they will have more respect for law enforcement, for each other, and for the laws themselves. In the up-coming election I think the most important point is that Bernie Sanders is wanting people to go to college for free. I am most worried that Hillary Clinton (a democrat) will become President and the United States will have to work around her demanding extra taxes from Americans.
