AP News

AP Exams are scheduled for May 5-16, 2014. Online registration is now open at https://user.totalregistration.net/AP/472306. The AP Exam fee is $89.00, however students taking the AP exam in Math, Science, and English will pay a reduced fee of $43.00. The National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI) will pay the remaining costs for those exams.


Online registration is open until Tuesday, April 1, 2014 at 11:59 pm. You will need a credit card or debit card to complete the online registration. Please see the attachment or Alisha Zimba in guidance for more information.

February Scholarships

Optimist International Essay Contest- This contest is open to students under the age of 19 that have not graduated from high school or the equivalent. No minimum age or grade level requirement. Interested students should submit 700-800 word essays on the assigned topic - How Dreams Lead to Success - to the Optimist Club of Virginia Beach for club level judging not later than February 7, 2014. Virginia Beach Optimist Club contest winners progress to the Virginia Capital District level. Prizes are a medallion at the club level, and plaque and a $2,500 scholarship at the District level. See Scholarship Central for more details. Deadline to be RECEIVED is February 7th.


**Charles Barker Automotive Scholarship- $500. Applicants must be seniors who demonstrate a dedication to community involvement and must be planning to attend a post-secondary school. See Mrs. Kressel or Scholarship Central for the application. Deadline is Feb. 14th. **-Specifically for Salem High Student!


All Saints' Scholarship Fund- Grant awards ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 are available to qualified graduating high school seniors who plan to continue their education at an accredited college or university. Applicants must have a strong high school academic record as well as a record of participation in other school and community activities which demonstrate strength of character and commitment. Financial need is also a factor in choosing award recipients. See Scholarship Central for more details. Deadline is February 14th.


Richard T. Schoonover II Memorial Scholarship- Applicants must be a daughter or son of a current or former Virginia Beach law enforcement official; demonstrated high standards of honesty, morality, integrity, character, compassion, and service to the community; high school senior in good academic standing who has been accepted to any institution of higher learning; participation for a minimum of two years while in high school in the Shamrock Marathon weekend, either as a participant or a volunteer; current GPA of 3.0 or better; and a recommendation by at least one non-family member adult. Chi Omicron Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.- Dyanne Buffington Memorial Scholarship- Applicants must be a graduating senior with a minimum GPA of 2.8 or better; must be planning to attend a two or four year college or university in the fall; submit application completely filled out with an essay attached; must be postmarked by February 21, 2014; and submit an essay - please attached for topics. See Scholarship Central for more details. Deadline is February 21st.


**Tidewater Community College Outstanding High School Graduate Award- Applicants must be 2013 graduate; have a GPA of 3.0 or higher; and complete application. Four Semesters will be paid at TCC and it is one scholarship per high school. The deadline is February 24th at 5pm, however, if you’d like Mrs. Kressel to take your application to TCC for you, please turn it in by Friday, February 21st. **-Specifically for Salem High Student!


Annase Wilks Hill Memorial Scholarship- $1500. Female African-American senior who is majoring in Engineering, Math or Science at 4 year college. Must have 3.5 GPA or above. Submit application and 3 letters of recommendation (specific requests) by Friday, February 21st to Mrs. Kressel. Salem can only submit one application!!!


VSGA-VIP Scholarship Foundation- Must be senior who has an interest in golf who will be attending college in Virginia. Go to scholarships.VSGA.org for more info. Deadline is February 24th.


Buick Achievers- High school senior who plan to enroll at a four year college and major in engineering, tech, design or business, with an interest in the automotive industry. Go to www.buickachievers.com for more info. Deadline is February 28th.


Hampton Roads Community Foundation- One application for SEVERAL Scholarships!! This is a great scholarship. See Mrs. Kressel or Scholarship Central for application. Deadline for the office to receive your application is February 28th!


Alpha Kappa Alpha Diggs Porter Scholarship- Applicants must be an African American Female high school senior who plans to attend a college or university during the upcoming academic year. Must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and submit two letters of recommendation along with a minimum 250 word essay. See Scholarship Central for more details. Deadline is February 28th.


Alpha Kappa Alpha HBCU - The Anna Jordan Brinkley Historically Black College & University Scholarship­- Applicants must be an African American female high school senior who plans to attend a Historically Black College or University in the 2012 Fall Semester. Submit two letters of recommendations and a minimum 250 word essay attached with application. Applicant must have a 3.0 GPA and submit an official high school transcript. See Scholarship Central for more details. Deadline is February 28th.


March Scholarships

Virginia PTA Citizenship Essay Project- Applicants must be in Grades 6-12 and attend a school that has a PTA or PTSA in good standing; and write an essay addressing the theme - Community Responsibility. See Scholarship Central for more details. Deadline is March 1st.


Tidewater Tuskegee Alumni Club Scholarship- Applicants must be a high school student within the Tidewater Hampton Roads area; have a GPA of at least 2.5; written request articulating specific need for tuition or room charges, if student is staying in a dorm, 1-2 pages; and accepted as a Tuskegee University undergraduate student. Scholarsip awards will range between $500 and $1000 per student, with an annual maximum of $2,000 given on a first come, first serve basis. See Scholarship Central for more details. Deadline is March 1st.


Anchor Scholarship- Applicant must be the dependent of Surface Navy Service member. The sponsor and or service member must be active duty or retired. They must have served at least six years in a unit under the administrative control of SURFLANT or SURFPAC. The six years need not be consecutive. Applicant must be pursuing a four-year degree at an accredited college as a full-time student. See Scholarship Central for more details. Deadline is March 1st.


Norfolk and Portsmouth Bar Association Foundation Scholarship Program- Applicants must be a graduating senior who resides in Norfolk, Portsmouth, Va Beach, or Chesapeake; submit any information to support claim of finanical need, if any; list of community activities; submit a written essay; an official transcript; and letters of recommendation. See Scholarship Central for more details. Deadline is March 3rd.


NNOA - STEM Scholarships- Applicants must be a high school senior in Hampton Roads. To be eligible students must meet the minimum criteria as delineated in Enclosure 1 and be accepted as a full time student majoring in a Tier 1 or Tier 2 degree program as specified in Enclosure 2. Eligible students must complete the scholarship application, Enclosure 3, and complete an essay. The essay must be a minimum of 500 words typed, double-spaced, and single-sided. Military Child Education Coalition - Bernard Curtis Brown II Memorial Space Camp Scholarship- Applicant must submit a hand-written essay, written by the student, which includes - why he or she should be selected, evidence of patriotism, future goals, community service, and after camp intentions; submit two letters of recommendation with contact information, non-family members only; and complete and submit the official application below. See Scholarship Central for more details. Deadline is March 10th.


**Town center Kiwanis Club- $2500. Applicant must be a Salem HS senior, admitted to a 4-year college or university. Fill out application, statement on why you are deserving of this scholarship, statement on your chosen profession, 3 letters of recommendation. Finalists will then be interviewed. See Mrs. Kressel for the application. Deadline is March 13th. **-Specifically for Salem High Student!


Second Calvary Baptist Church - W.H. Gray Men's Ministry Scholarship Award- Applicants must be a high school male student who is currently matriculating on a full-time basis at a Hampton Roads High School, is in good standing in Senior year, with a minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale, and meet all of the eligibility requirements and deadlines to qualify. PCEA - Ted G. Wilson Memorial Scholarship- Applicant is responsible for ensuring that all items listed are submitted to the National PCEA Scholarship Committee - Official Transcript of high school or college grades and latest SAT Scores if available. Completed application form; one evaluation form completed by your high school guidance counselor or college faculty advisor, which ever is applicable at time of the application; high school principal evaluation acceptable where counselor information is not available; and one evaluation form completed by an adult not related to the applicant. Marine Spouses' Thrift Shop - Marc S. Tace Scholarship- Applicants must be a graduating high school senior who are the dependants of active duty, retired, reservists, or deceased members of the U.S. Marine Corps stationed and living in the Hampton Roads area. Submit a photocopy of students Military ID Card both front and back; an official copy of high school transcript; two personal letters of recommendation, one must be from a teacher or counselor; and an original essay of not more than 500 words on the topic, Explain how growing up as a Marine Corps KID will help you as you begin this new chapter in your life. Virginia Mayflower Society Scholarship- Applicant must be a high school senior, a college undergraduate student, or a university graduate student under the age of 26 enrolled in an accredited educational institution or home-schooled equivalent. The applicant must satisfy at least one of the following requirements - be a resident of Virginia; be related to a resident of Virginia; be a member or Junior member of the Virginia Mayflower Society; or be related to a member of the Virginia Mayflower Society. The applicant must have a GPA of at least B or the equivalent. See Scholarship Central for more details. Deadline is March 15th.


**Elaine Graves Memorial Scholarship- $1000. Applicant must be a Salem senior; demonstrate financial need; have at least a 2.5 GPA and an interest in Science. Submit application, transcript, essay & 1 letter of recommendation from a Science teacher. See Mrs. Kressel for application. Deadline is March 21st. **-Specifically for Salem High Student!


**Arleen Linehan Memorial Scholarship- $1000. Applicant must be a Salem senior; have at least a 2.5 GPA and an interest in Science, specifically Oceanography. Submit application, transcript, essay & 1 letter of recommendation from a Science teacher. See Mrs. Kressel for application. Deadline is March 21st. **-Specifically for Salem High Student!


*Glenwood Elementary School Community Scholarship- Applicants must have attended Glenwood ES for at least one year; be a graduating senior with intentions to continue their education; provide verification of community service volunteer work; possesses a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher; complete an essay; and submit letters of recommendation. Please see Scholarship Central for the application. Deadline is March 21st.


Tidewater Builders Association Scholarship Foundation- Applicants must be a local high school senior residing in the TBA service area of Chesapeake, Eastern Shore of VA, Franklin, Southhampton County, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk, or Va Beach; must be a U.S. Citizen; attend and pursue an accredited four-year undergraduate degree program as a full time student during your four-year period of continual, uninterrupted studies; demonstrate financial need; and remain in good standing academically. Suburban Woman's Club - Susan Emerson Education Scholarship- Applicants must be a Va Beach high school graduate planning to attend a College in Virginia; must have a scholastic standing of 3.0 or above; submit a 200-word essay stating your educational objectives; a list of your activities in high school; a list of your activities, volunteering and hobbies; high school transcript and at least two letters of recommendation. See Scholarship Central for more details. Deadline is March 21st.


**Virginia Beach Sports Club Scholarship- $2500. Applicants must have played and earned a monogram in a recognized high school sport & must rank in the top 10 percent of their class. Submit a scholarship application and a letter of approximately 200 words giving information about participating in school and community activities, educational plans, career goals, and reasons for believing that they are eligible for a scholarship from VBSC. A letter of recommendation for the School Principal, Coach, or Counselor and a transcript of grade and class rank must accompany the application. See Mrs. Kressel for application. Submit application package to Mrs. Kressel by Monday, March 24th (note-this is an earlier deadline than on application!) **-Specifically for Salem High Student!


AIAA HRS Scholarship - Futures in Aerospace Scholarship- Applicants need to write an essay, no more than 1200 words, on the proposed area of study in engineering, physical science, or applied science and its relation to aerospace; have a scholastic achievement as determined by high school GPA and score on the Scholastic Aptitude or other college entrance tests; submit a letter of recommendation by a high school faculty member with personal classroom knowledge of the applicant's abilities; and show a potential for leadedership as indicated by the applicant's record of extrcurricular activties. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. VB Almunae Chapter - Sadye Ringer-Shaw Memorial Scholarship- Applicants must be an African-American; attend high school in the City of Va Beach; be classified as a senior; possess good citizenship and attendance records; have a 2.5 or better GPA; plan to pursue a bachelor's degree starting with 12 credit hours at a four-year college or university; submit two letters of recommendation; submit an official transcript; and submit a 500 to 600 word essay on a specified topic. National Help America See Scholarship for A Blind Student- This scholarship is open nationally to high school seniors who are considered totally blind. The interpretation of this is someone who has no light perception and considered a person who cannot see. The essay should highlight the student's creativity, research and life experiences. It must also include, but is not limited to, responses to the following questions that pertain to the student's situation. All essays must be between 500-1500 words. Ocean Park Civic League - The Louise and George Lyon Memorial Scholarship- Applicants must be a senior year student in an accredited high school; have been a resident of Va Beach, VA for at least a year preceding the date of application; be a student in good standing; maintain a GPA of at least 2.8; must attend a college or nursing program in the state of Virginia; and submit three letters of character reference, including at least one personal reference from an official at your school and two from persons other than relatives. Young American - Creative Patriotic Art Awards- Students must be in grades 9, 10, 11 or 12; must attend school in the same state as the sponsoring Ladies Auxiliary; home-schooled students are eligible; and foreign-exchange students are not. Virginia Beach 9-1-1 Scholarship- Applicant must be a graduating senior who will attend college on a full time schedule in the year 2014, and whose parent(s) is currently a Public Safety Employee for the City of Virginia Beach who works, or has worked rotating shifts during the student's elementary, middle or high school years. Applicant must complete and sign their application; submit at least one letter of recommendation from someone other than a family member; submit a transcript of their high school grades - minimum GPA of 2.5 is required; and write a paragraph of approximately 500-1000 words describing how shift work has impacted their life. Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital Auxiliary Scholarship- Applicants must be a graduating senior who is a bona fide resident of the City of Virginia Beach; must be accepted by a Tidewater colleges or universities into a medical type program.
