Burnside Bulletin
December 2022
Dear Parents/Guardians:
With winter break upon us, we encourage you to relax, unwind, and settle into a safe & restful break. Winter break dates are December 22, 2022 - January 3, 2023.This first half of the year has flown by! Teachers and students have been working hard.
Parent-Teacher Conferences: We appreciate all our parents/guardians who were able to participate in parent-teacher conferences this year. We had an excellent participation rate. Thanks again for taking time from your busy schedules to conference with your child’s teacher. Good communication between home and school greatly increases the success rate of students. We thank you for helping your child get off to a good start.
Attendance: Students demonstrate higher achievement gains when they have good attendance. Being on time is just as important. At Burnside, instruction starts at 7:45 a.m. Help your children by making sure they have good attendance and arrive on time.
Cold Weather Gear
As we move into the cold, mittens/gloves, hats, snow pants, and boots will be needed for recess. We do go outside, even at 0 degrees. Let us know if you have any needs in this area by contacting Jane Wassink at jewassink@rwps.org.
May you enjoy the break and return rested for a fantastic new year!

Safe Routes to School
Burnside Elementary School has been awarded planning assistance from the Minnesota Department of Transportation to create a Safe Routes to School Plan to ensure students have a safe, convenient and fun route to walk, bike and roll to school.
We would like to hear from the parents and caregivers on what they think the barriers are to having their kids walk or bike to school. We would also like feedback on other ways to get the kids more active before and after school.
Ideas include: A bus stop and walk. Where students are dropped off at a certain distance from the school and walk together in a safe manner. A walking bus or bike train. Where a group is led by a trained individual to have them get to school. Walking activities throughout the school day.
We are open to all ideas and appreciate your feedback.

If you're cleaning out your closets...
Also, we can always use youth leggings (L/XL) and "soft pants" in good condition.
Thank you for thinking of us.
Encouraging Literacy
Reading with children and helping them practice specific reading components can dramatically improve their ability to read. Adults can help children learn to be good readers by systematically practicing:
- Listen to your child read out loud.
- Praise your child's reading.
- Make reading time part of your daily routine.
- Leave books in your kid's bedroom.
- Read books your child likes.
Choose Kindness Grant
The Choose Kindness Foundation is supporting our PBIS program at Burnside. As part of our Kindness Initiative, December 5 - 16, Burnside will host a food drive. See the below buttons for more information. We will be accepting cash donations as well as unexpired and shelf stable food items. See the photo below for classroom project ideas. You will hear more from your child's classroom.
