The Adventures of a South Pole Pig
A Message from Principal Cross
Greetings, East Elementary families!
The time has come to unveil our next shared reading experience. We will soon be embarking on an adventure together, along with Flora, your new favorite pig, in The Adventures of a South Pole Pig. We will kick off our reading journey together on Thursday, November 11, from 6:00-7:30 with a variety of hands-on activities, exciting games, and plenty of family time. See below for more information about our November family engagement event.
This week, every East Elementary family will receive their own copy of the book, along with a reading calendar, a fun family activity guide, and discussion questions you can share along the way.
Starting November 16, we'll all start reading along together! Reading aloud at home is valuable because it better prepares your child to be an effective reader, and it is also a fun, worthwhile family activity. With this program, we aim to build a Community of Readers at our school. Everyone – students, parents, teachers, even administrative staff – will all be following along.
At school, students will engage in a variety of activities and discussions around the book. From November 16 through December 17, all of our East Elementary Pirates will be talking about The Adventures of a South Pole Pig, and your kiddos will want to be part of the fun!
Here's a review of The Adventure of a South Pole Pig from Publisher's Weekly to give you a glimpse into this adventure:
Gutsy and curious, Flora the pig feels hemmed in by her pen at the farm and longs to see the world. Opportunity arises when a man comes to take one of the piglets away; Flora allows herself to be captured, imagining she's at the start of a wonderful adventure. Flora's innocence in this and other matters is a key part of Kurtz's story. The pig is loaded onto a ship headed to the South Pole, where a team plans to cross Antarctica via a dogsled team; Flora assumes she will be part of the pack pulling the sled, not—as readers will have figured out—an entrée. The knowledge of Flora's precarious fate hangs over what's otherwise an upbeat and lively story, as Flora works hard to prove her worth to the crew and forge friendships with Sophia, a fiercely independent cat, and Oscar, the lead sled dog. Like Wilbur before her, Flora's spirit and determination might have the effect, intended or otherwise, of causing a new generation of readers to reconsider their consumption of meat.
I know that you’ll enjoy this special reading time with your children. I can't wait to talk with your child in the days to come about this inspiring pig with a passion for adventure. "When a whole school reads a book, there's a lot to talk about." With your help, we can build a Community of Readers at our school.
This is going to be so much fun!
