Mysterious Powder
Lab Report
Tests
My group chose on doing iodine, litmus paper, PR, and vinegar. We thought since only a few tests reacted to vinegar so that test would definitely eliminate a few powders. My group thought that the litmus paper might give us a clue to what it is, and see if the test matches another powder's PH. Only one test in our unit showed positive for starch so we thought that maybe our mysterious powder might have starch in it too. My group decided that we should test with PR too. We figured that we should see if it has any acids in the mysterious powders.
Test #1
In test #1 we added vinegar to the mysterious powder. As soon as we added the vinegar to the mysterious powder it fizzed up. At one point of the test we thought that it might just fizz over the top. This test got us thinking that the mysterious powder might be either red or orange. Then we thought that it might be both.
Test #2
My group was really excited for this test. We thought that this test will give us some very big hints to what the mysterious powder might be. When we added the water it made a sticky paste. When we dipped in the litmus paper we found out that the PH of the mysterious powder is 8. Just like the powder red.
Test #3
In test #3 we tested it for starches. To do that we needed iodine. When we added the iodine it slowly oozed around the powder in a dark brown. When we mixed it in it turned into a dark brown paste. Just like the powder green.
Test #4
For test #4 we tested for acids with PR. We thought that if the test comes out positive that it must be a mixture of many powders. As soon as the liquid touched the powder it turned red. When we mixed it it turned even darker. Just like the powders red, orange, green, and yellow.
Results/Conclushion
My group thinks that the mysterious powder is a mixture of red, orange, and green. Red because it matches the tests for vinegar, PR, and litmus paper. Orange because it matches the tests PR and vinegar. And orange because it is the only powder that has starch in it.
