Semiotic Systems
Incorporating Semiotics into Literacy Teaching
What are semiotic systems?
Semiotics is the study of signs and symbols. There are five semiotic systems and when two or more are combined, a multimodal text is created. The five systems are:
- linguistics
- visual
- gestural
- audio
- spatial
How can semiotic systems enhance Literacy teaching?
Understanding and interpreting how and why signs, symbols and images are used in multimodal texts enhances the meaning of that text. Students will start to think more analytically about how the purpose of the text is conveyed to the audience and what compositional choices the author or illustrator made during the creative process.
