What is the Long Island Writing Project?
The LIWP comprises teachers from kindergarten through university. Our seminar leaders are outstanding educators from different grade levels and disciplines in local schools, and we have a strong, ongoing partnership with Hofstra University's Department of Literacy Studies. LIWP teacher-consultants keep up with research and changes in education and their work is grounded in practical classroom approaches. Through our model of teachers teaching teachers, participants in the LIWP strengthen the classroom strategies they already find effective in teaching writing and develop new ones.
One of the most important foundational beliefs of our Project is that teachers improve their knowledge of teaching writing by writing themselves. Another is that the best way to improve our own teaching is through sharing what works with other effective teachers. We welcome your inquiries, and look forward to writing, learning and teaching with you.
The Long Island Writing Project at SUNY Nassau Community College is an approved Sponsor of Continuing Teacher and Leader Education (CTLE) pursuant to Section 80-6 of the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education, New York State Education Department (NYSED).

Summer Mini Institute for Levittown School District
Over 20 middle and high school teachers participated in this mini-institute, co-facilitated by Heidi Atlas and Darshna Katwala.
Teachers were guided to effectively generate a range of writing across genres. Teachers were immersed in writing, reading, and professional inquiry, ultimately returning to their classrooms empowered to bring their students to higher levels of performance. Shared reading, writing-to-learn activities, memoir writing, writing groups, active listening techniques, and revision strategies were addressed. Techniques for teaching argument writing, as well as narrative and information writing were modeled.

Writing For Change: 2018-2019 Saturday Series
Out of the Classroom And Into the Wild: Creative Ways to Find & Raise Your Professional Voice
Workshop by Katherine Schulten
What are you proud of in your teaching practice? What stories do you have to tell? With what do you struggle? What do you wish people knew about schools - about children, or teenagers, or teaching, or learning?
In Katherine Schulten's interactive workshop, join us to talk about why the world needs your unique teacher voice. We will look at the many interesting forms "voice" can take in 2018. Via a series of exercises, we will identify the ideas, issues, questions, and stories that matter to you most, and consider ways to share them.
During the workshop you will work in small groups to take the topics and themes you identified and start a piece of professional writing.
The workshop will take place on Saturday, September 29th at Nassau Community College (room to be announced), beginning at 9:30am. The Saturday Series workshops all conclude by noon. Please RSVP to Darshna Katwala to reserve your spot! Workshops are free but we encourage you to please become a dues paying member of the LIWP to help us continue to offer these powerful workshops and experiences for educators.
