DuneNews
This is the LAST issue of the DuneNews for the 2021-22 school year. The DuneNews will resume with a Back-To-School issue in mid July and regular issues after school begins in August. Have a great summer!
A Message from the Superintendent...
Dear Duneland Families:
We have reached the end of the 2021-2022 school year and I would like to thank all DSC students, families, teachers and staff for your time, talent, and expertise. We look forward to celebrating our graduating Class of 2022 on Wednesday, June 1 at 7:00 p.m. in the CHS Stadium and will continue to communicate with you during the summer months as we prepare to welcome students and staff back in August.
As we transition to the 2022-2023 school year, we are working through staffing shortages in a number of departments. While these shortages began at the onset of the pandemic, we are still struggling to staff key positions in custodial, child nutrition, and transportation departments. Specifically, a shortage of bus drivers has caused us to evaluate and re-design bus routes for the 2022-23 school year. As a result, DSC will no longer provide bus transportation from Bailly Elementary, Westchester Intermediate, and/or Chesterton Middle School to the Boys & Girls Club after school. Should the transportation staffing outlook improve, we will look to reimplement this service. Currently, we are evaluating alternative measures to assist Bailly students going to the Club..
When the Liberty and Westchester campuses open for students in grades 5-8, another restructuring of bus routes will take place. In moving from nine schools to eight, we hope to reduce student travel times, wait times on campus before and after school, and improve after school extra-curricular service. During this process, we’ll also be evaluating and likely adjusting school start and end times.
Thank you for your support and understanding.
Have a great summer!
Sincerely,
Chip Pettit

CHS Academic Ring Recipients
Chesterton High School honored 45 senior students with the Class of 2022 Academic Rings at Senior Honors Night sponsored by the school on Monday, May 16 at 7 p.m. in the CHS Auditorium.
The students are: Hannah Anders, Ryan Bakaitis, Madelin Billings, Emma Bolinger, Jessica Bouche, Ellery Brunt, Alissa Capehart, Katherine Caracci, Brianna Connors, Samuel Cooke, Peyton Day, Juliet Dickens, Hannah Estridge, Cormac Fallon, Celia Faroh, Layla Ferguson, Grant Flesher, Liam Grimes, Molly Hadenfelt, Rina Hector, Alana Jardenil, David Jugovic, Alejandro Kincaid Rivadeneyra, Kaitlyn Kogl, Danielle Kontos, Caitlin Kovalan, Mackenna Lee, Joshua Lemon, Jessica Manojlovic, Peter McNicholas, Jude Mochen, Andie Nevers, Ryan O’Dell, Lauren Olson, Nathan Osborn, Veronika Ozimek, Jacob Perkins, Connor Potesta, Tristan Reed, Emily Richardson, Leah Rochford, Presli Rose, Simran Shah, Mackenzie Sharp, Eric Sparks, Milena Veltri
The academic ring is an honor bestowed upon senior students at Chesterton High School who have met a rigid set of academic and co-curricular criteria. The ring resulted from a year of study by a faculty, parent and student committee. The idea of the ring was to recognize outstanding achievement by CHS students and to acknowledge their "renaissance" education.
The criterion for the ring is based on a 15-point scale. In order to earn the ring a student must accumulate 14 points or more and earn a cumulative 4.3 GPA by the 7th semester. It is the committee's desire to recognize as many students as possible; however, the academic ring is intended to promote a totally well rounded student who has met a high level of academic criteria.
Points for the academic ring are determined as follows:
1 point for every semester on Principal's Honor Roll (7 points possible)
1 point for National Honor Society membership
1 point for co-curricular participation each year (4 points possible)
1 point for 40 credits earned at seventh semester
1 point for no grade below a "B" (seven semesters)
1 point for earning a 4.3 grade point average for all seven semesters
