The Kruskamp Chronicle: 8/9/16
5th grade news and more...
About Mrs. Kruskamp
Hi! I've thoroughly enjoyed getting to know your child these first two weeks of school. Here's a little about me. My husband and I have lived in the Lilburn/Snellville area for 14 years. Our 2 daughters (both students at Gwin Oaks) and pets keep us busy, but we try our best to enjoy our time together at home. I earned my Masters Degree in education at Piedmont College in 2005 and am incredibly happy to have found a home at Gwin Oaks. My goal for this school year is simple: have fun and work hard. With your help, there's nothing we can't accomplish!

If you would like your child's photo to NOT be used for in-school purposes, such as this newsletter, the year book or end-of-year/graduation slide shows, you must put your request in writing and submit it to Dr. Burnley, our principal.
Reading Logs Are Here!
We've begun our year-long commitment to read at least 20 minutes every night. Please sign your child's completed reading log to be turned in every Monday, along with Friday Folders. Our goal is 100% participation 100% of the time. This is a school-wide program and a running log of classes with 100% participation is displayed on the wall outside the cafeteria. By helping us reach our goal, the class will earn a fun day activity every 9 weeks as well as school-wide party at the end of each semester!
Keep it up!
- Please sign your child's agenda every night, except Friday. Your child is responsible for entering homework assignments and sight words for the week. I'm very pleased with the class' high level of responsibility. Let's keep it up!
- Friday Folders will come home every Friday. Please sign the current week's conduct/work habits form and pay close attention to any signature requests in the left pocket. Work in the right pocket may be kept at home.
- And don't forget to sign those reading logs to be turned in Monday with Friday Folders!
This week in...
- Social Studies: We're wrapping up our 2-week unit on the Civil War.
- Reading: The word of the week was genre. We compared different types of fiction texts and continued to lengthen our in-class reading time. Way to go!
- Word Work: Students identified prefixes and suffixes in words we use every day.
- Writing: Your child exceeded my expectations for our first unguided, personal narrative writing task. We prepared ahead of time by brainstorming meaningful story starters.
- Grammar: We learned to use conjunctions to make interesting compound sentences.
- Math: We're identifying math strategies to guide our thinking.
Next week in...
- Science: We will begin our 2-week long investigation of Plant and Animal Kingdom Classification.
Vocabulary
*Classify
*Vertebrate
*Invertebrate
*Fungi
*Nonvascular
*Vascular
- Reading: Close reading is identifying the 1) Main Idea and 2) Supporting Sentences of every paragraph. Reading makes us smarter!
- Word Work: Prefixes and suffixes are EVERYWHERE.
- Writing: Our focus all year is writing every day. We'll be editing our personal narratives with close paid to transition words and complex sentences.
- Grammar: We'll spend some time reviewing conjunctions for mastery.
- Math: We will continue to "explore and store" math-solving strategies. Please help your child study multiplication facts at home.
Counselor's Corner:
We hope everyone is having a good start to the school year! We have two counselors at Gwin Oaks this school year. Natalie Pugh will be working with K, 1st, and 2nd grade and Ashley Thomas will be working with 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade. We look forward to working with all of your children this school year! We are always available to talk or meet with students as well as parents regarding any concerns.
Just as a reminder, we are now requesting that when a student is absent from school, documentation such as, a note signed* by the parent/guardian or a doctor's excuse stating reason for absence is needed within 48 hours of return.
*an e-mail will also be considered a signed note
