Principal's Perspective - PBIS
The students at Falcon Ridge Elementary have done a fantastic job of meeting the expectations of the staff, and they now have an award that represents how well they are doing.
This past summer, the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) recognized Falcon Ridge as one of 71 schools across the state as an Exemplar PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) school. Through interviews with students and staff, along with data that measures knowledge of school-wide expectations and behavior data, MDE presented the recognition for deserving schools, and Falcon Ridge celebrated during an all school meeting during the first week of school.
Falcon Ridge began implementing PBIS during the 2012-13 school year, and has continued to build and refine building expectations, along with how they are modeled and taught for students. Our entire staff takes time over the first six weeks of school each year to teach, model, and explain what the expectations are during different parts of their day. We have worked to partner with our transportation staff, paraprofessionals, and all staff who work with our students to best support their academic, social, and emotional needs.
Since incorporating PBIS at Falcon Ridge, staff and students have used the acronym R.E.A.P. (Respect, Effort, Attitude, and Pride) as our single school rule. By utilizing research-based best practices, the staff at Falcon Ridge have many ways of acknowledging positive student behaviors and actions. Trojan Tickets are awarded to students who are adhering to our school-wide expectations; Student of the Month honors are given each month by classroom teachers; Rider of the Month certificates are given out each month by each bus/van driver at Falcon Ridge; and verbal praise is used to acknowledge positive student behavior.
By creating school-wide expectations that support the needs of our students, our building behavior data has reinforced the idea that students are continuing to improve on owning their learning and their behavior. Utilizing PBIS will only continue to help us grow, as we look to support our students with sound expectations at Falcon Ridge.
Sincerely,
David Giesen
