Stimulating Independence in Children
To be successful in life, children must always be guided toward further independence. If parents are having a hard time dealing with how fast their children seem to be growing up, all too often they move in the direction of creating dependency instead. Ultimately it is a parent’s job to be able to help their child learn how to live on their own someday. During elementary school we are taking small but important steps toward that goal. So what can you do to stimulate that independence? Consider the following:
Avoid pampering your child. If you always do for them the things they can handle doing themselves, you are sending a message that you don’t believe they are capable of doing it well enough. For example, while it is a parent’s job to maintain communication with the school, it is your child’s job to empty their backpack each night and bring to you whatever they have brought home from school. It is also their job to pack that same backpack each night so that they are prepared for school! Reminders are okay, but don’t do it for them!
Make your child take responsibility for dressing appropriately for the weather. Listen to the weather report together either on the TV news or the radio station. Make some suggestions for what would be appropriate to wear and then let them make the final decision.
Insist on your child’s help with household chores. There are many small jobs children can be responsible for that help to develop a sense of interdependence and being a contributing member of their family. Children enjoy being helpful and will be learning skills they will need later as an adult.
Smile confidently as you send them on their way to class each morning. After the first week of school our students have successfully figured out where their classroom is located and how to follow the teacher’s morning routine. They feel so proud to do it on their own! Our hugs and kisses zone in the lobby reinforces their confidence and keeps all our students safe.
