From Mr. Clemente
Dear Winter Park Band families,
What a great Middle School Night on Friday - the first one in a long time that we've been able to have a full evening of activities with our Future Wildcats! It was so much fun seeing everyone get together for the first time in the Auditorium at school and then get the chance to hang out and get to know each other in the stands at the game. The band directors from Audubon, Arbor Ridge, Glenridge, and Maitland all had wonderful feedback to report and lots of "This was so much fun" and "What a great experience" comments heard after the game on the bus ride back. We look forward to seeing many of those students again at our annual Fall Festival of Bands in November!
Congratulations to our 30 students who performed their 2023 FBA All-State Audition on Saturday at Ocoee HS! I am so very proud of each of you for going above and beyond and tackling challenging audition requirements. Regardless of the results of the auditions when they come out, know that by going through that preparation and practice you have come out the other side a more skilled musician. The students that performed on Saturday were:
- Peyton Adkinson (percussion, jazz trombone)
- Charlotte Batten (alto sax, soprano sax)
- Jacob Blaney (oboe)
- Antonio Brown (alto sax)
- Eli Castro (trumpet)
- ME Conti (percussion, jazz bass)
- Charlie Davey (trombone, jazz trombone)
- Ben DeLoach (alto sax, jazz alto sax)
- Josh Dorough (trumpet, jazz trumpet)
- Isaac Faggen (percussion, jazz drumset)
- Henry Fu (clarinet, jazz tenor sax)
- Landon Genovese (jazz bass)
- Kyle Hannon (bassoon)
- Colin Hetz (alto sax, jazz alto sax)
- Antonina Kest (percussion)
- Keira Mackinnon (flute)
- Alex Maloof (clarinet)
- Zach Rediske (clarinet)
- Taylor Ribaric (tuba)
- Aly Rodriguez Vargas (jazz bari sax)
- Kyle Schaefer (bass clarinet)
- Anderson Smith (trumpet, jazz trumpet)
- Vignesh Somasekar (percussion, piano)
- Jason Stephenson (clarinet, jazz tenor sax)
- Lilah Storch (oboe)
- Emily Strickland (flute, piccolo)
- Ryan Strickland (alto sax)
- Nina Vassos (oboe)
- Emily Yeh (flute, piccolo)
- Andrew Yuska (percussion, piano, jazz piano)
We have a regular week of marching band after school activities ahead of us for this week, but also some important deadlines:
- Due Monday, 9/25: Tri-State/FOW Nomination Request Forms
- Due Wednesday, 9/27: Concert Uniform Accessories Orders and Band Spirit Wear Orders
Lastly, looking ahead to next week - it's Homecoming Week! In addition to our regular rehearsals, the SOTW marches in the Homecoming Parade and "Roar" on Wednesday of that week. Also, Jazz Ensemble I will perform at the Winter Park Autumn Art Festival on Saturday of that week at 10 AM on the Central Park stage.
Let's make it a great week!
Mr. Clemente
From our Band Booster President, Mrs. Dana Adkinson
Woo hoo! We actually made it to the stadium for an ENTIRE Middle School Night! That hasn’t happened in several years. The Stay-Away-Rain-Dances are working!
And it was a great night! Almost 200 middle schoolers and chaperones joined our SOTW students in the stands after warming up in the auditorium. Great job, SOTW students with showing these little kids the ropes, mentoring them a bit and making them feel welcome. Another valuable leadership and life lesson in “networking and social situations” experienced courtesy of your very own band program! I loved seeing the older students working with the middle schoolers. I can’t say it enough .. these band kids are SUCH GREAT KIDS!!!!
These kids are great probably because their parents are GREAT! A huge thanks to all the SOTW chaperone parents who stepped up to help with anything and everything Friday night. Thanks to the parents who directed middle schoolers, welcomed parents and organized and passed out t-shirts (Kellie Smith, the Farmers, Lissette Dennis, Damaris Lima, Lara Murphy and Kirsten Cowan) , ensured that the buses were where they were supposed to be (Heather Ribaric and Robyn Fodor) and herded the middle schoolers onto their buses, and even guided them back to the group when they wandered off (Laura Cambridge). It obviously takes a village to run a band program! Kinda like herding cats, but wouldn’t it be great to turn those cats into our SOTW wildcats (see what I did there?) over the next couple of years?!
Another thanks to section parents for sending out mid week reminders to their sections .. many hands make light work! That mid week bullet update during these busy weeks is great!
And special thanks to Ellen DeLoach for coordinating and hustling on her day off to make the Friday Night concessions switch happen in a matter of days while working full time! Superwoman! And a big shout out to our “foodie parents” Friday night who donated cookies (Molly Yuska), manned the first ever Dollar Store Band Candy and Drink Table (Alice Davis and Jen Mullins), grabbed last-minute pre-order pizza off site for the Evans Band (Natalie Storch) and helped with serving during 3rd quarter break (Rowena Flores and I’m sure I’m missing some folks!). And kudos to Heather Ribaric, (as a kindergarten teacher during her day job), the closest qualified of the group on hand to hang out with Little Clemente while Dad played band director and Momma Clemente was home super sick. Puts a whole new meaning to the “band family” designation!
Remember, Concert Accessory orders (school pay) and Band Spirit Wear (https://winterparkhsband.spiritsale.com/products) are due Wednesday of this week!
Looking forward to a less hectic game night this week, then homecoming week after next! Have a great week, Band Fam!
From our Chaperone Coordinator, Mrs. Robyn Fodor

Hosting approximately 250 top high school students for an intensive musical experience facilitated by world-class clinicians and esteemed members of the Florida State University faculty, this unique honor band experience offers rich interaction with outstanding literature, masterclasses on every instrument, and numerous concerts including the highly-anticipated PRISM concert.
Student participants will comprise four concert wind ensembles (nominated by home directors) and one select honors jazz ensemble (pre-audition required).

If you wish to be nominated for this year's Tri-State festival, please complete the Google form linked below by Monday, September 25.
Tri-State Band Festival Nomination Form
FESTIVAL OF WINDS (USF) - Open to 10th, 11th, & 12th grade
The University of South Florida’s School of Music is proud to host the 48th Festival of Winds on November 30 - December 3, 2023. FOW was founded by Jim Croft in 1974 and has grown to become one of the finest events of its type in the southeast. In addition to playing in one of three large concert bands conducted by outstanding clinicians, students will participate in master classes, attend multiple concerts, play in a chamber ensemble or jazz band, and experience the thrill of being on a college campus for four days. Participants are nominated by their band directors based on their musical and leadership excellence, and must be high school sophomores, juniors, or seniors in order to be eligible.
In addition to the three large Concert Bands and Instrumental Choirs – (flute choir, percussion, etc.) – we are bringing back the Jazz Band as a primary ensemble. Students who are interested in playing in the jazz band must submit a separate audition, and if selected, will not perform in a Concert Band, but will participate in all other aspects of the festival – masterclasses, chamber ensembles, etc. The jazz band and chamber ensembles will perform on Saturday evening, and the concerts will be livestreamed. Students who are not selected for the Jazz Band will perform in a Concert Band.
The 2023 Clinicians are Dr. Sarah McKoin (Texas Tech University), Dr. Rebecca Phillips (Colorado State University), and Dr. William Wiedrich (University of South Florida). In addition, students will interact with and learn from USF's outstanding School of Music faculty.
If you wish to be nominated for this year's Festival of Winds, please complete the Google form linked below by Monday, September 25.
Concert Uniform Accessories Order - Available 9/19 - 9/27
With our Fall Concert approaching in October, the Band will be placing a bulk order of Concert Uniform Accessories. As explained on the Uniform Accessory Information sheet from registration night, students are responsible for providing all parts of the concert uniform that are not either the tuxedo jacket and pants or concert dress. Tux jackets and pants along with the dresses are owned by the school and lent to students each year. To make obtaining those accessories easy for our families, the Band program will make a bulk order next week through our supplier. You are not required to use our supplier; however, they will most likely give you the best deal and there are no shipping costs.
To complete the Concert Tuxedo:
- Black wing tipped tuxedo shirt - $45.00
- Black bow tie - $5.00
- Black cummerbund - $10.00
- Package of all three (shirt, tie, cummerbund) - $60.00
You will also need black dress shoes (completely black dress shoes, not your marching band shoes) and black dress socks. Shoes and socks are provided by the student.
To complete the Concert Dress:
- Faux pearl earrings – pierced ears - $7.00
- Faux pearl earrings – non-pierced ears - $8.00
- Faux pearl necklace - $12.00
You will also need closed-toe black dress shoes. Most choose to wear a simple black flat with the dress, but you may also choose to wear a short heel.
Items will appear on SchoolPay Tuesday, 9/19 and be available until Wednesday, 9/27. The order must be placed by 9/28 in order to be here in time for our performance. Keep in mind, students who are wearing a tuxedo have already been sized for their black tuxedo shirt when they were fitted earlier in the school year.
If you have any questions, please email our Uniform Chairs, Amanda Schaefer and Andrea Rediske.
