Franklin Academy IB PYP Mission Statement

Our mission is to challenge students and staff to take positive action that impacts our world. Our community engages and empowers students to become life long learners, teaching them to think critically and globally. We create citizens who will lead by example, appreciate and respect diversity, reflect thoughtfully and celebrate success. Franklin Academy students exhibit strong character and intellect along with a willingness to serve others within our global community.

Essential agreements: How can we learn best?

We are so excited to start off this year allowing the children to take responsibility for their learning! In each classroom, students and teachers work together to develop a list of qualities that will make their learning environment function best for all learners. Students and teachers agree to follow these goal-oriented, solution-based agreements. This is a great opportunity for students to take agency with their learning environment and responsibility for their behavior.

We have worked on these essential agreements by focusing on the Learner Profile in all aspects of the school, both in the classroom and the common areas. You can find some examples of essential agreements that classrooms have made below:

Attribute of the month: Knowledgeable

The learner profile attribute we are focusing on this month is “knowledgeable.” To be knowledgeable is to develop big ideas, explore knowledge across a variety of subjects, and engage with issues and ideas that have local and global significance. We also look at our knowledge with an open mind, looking at all different perspectives!

We promote being knowledgeable at school by having students explore a variety of topics in each of the subject areas and apply the knowledge they learn to new situations. Students also participate in the fine arts and Spanish language program to enhance their learning.

At home, you can help your child develop the attribute of being knowledgeable by asking him/her questions about what he/she has learned, encouraging your child to learn new subjects and to apply their learning in new situations. Questions to help them include:

  • What is something new you learned today that you didn’t know yesterday?
  • Why is that knowledge (or what you learned) important to you? To our community? To the world?
  • What is something new you want to learn about?
  • What is the most interesting thing you learned today?

The Learner Profile

During morning meetings, students are diving into the 10 attributes of the Learner Profile and dissecting them for meaning. Students have done a great job taking ownership of these attributes and making it a daily part of their lives!
Big picture

This year, as part of our IB program, we will be implementing a Positive behavior system throughout the school called "Patriot bucks". Students will have the opportunity to win dollars based on qualities they show both in and outside of the classroom. We will use 5 of the IB attitudes as incentive for each dollar:

1. Empathy

2. Integrity

3. Respect

4. Cooperation

5. Commitment

Every Friday, we will be raffling off these bucks for prizes. If you are willing to donate prizes for this Positive Behavior System, please contact Mr. Monds ( We would greatly appreciate it!
