Spartan Spotlight
News from Broad Run High School for the Week of May 18-22
From the Principal
BRHS Families,
AP testing is under way. Thank you to the students and teachers who shifted significantly to get ready. I want to encourage everyone to finish the school year strong and stay engaged. It will help you in your subsequent course work. If you need help, please reach out to your teachers, counselors, administrator, or me!
Seniors, please see the Class of 2020 web site and other information in this newsletter. Grades 9-11, and be sure your course requests for next year are 100% accurate and what you will commit to.
While we have three weeks left, we are working with LCPS on guidance on how to close out our school year. This includes student return of items such as athletic equipment, books, senior chrome books, and student retrieval of items from lockers.
Please be sure to check your student emails (studentnumber@lcps.org) and school emails to parents from the school for more information. We are also updating information on our school web site.

Orchestra News
The music department would like to share some accomplishments of our orchestra students from earlier in the 2019-2021 school year. In November, Broad Run had four musicians participate in VBDODA’s North Central Regional Orchestra. This highly competitive group encompasses a quarter of the state geographically. Students earned this honor through auditions in September and then gather under the baton of a guest conductor for a two-day event culminating in performance. This year, Broad Run was proudly represented by the following musicians: Adrian Cheung (violin, 10) who also served as concertmaster, Michael Chou (viola, 11), Jessica Jiang (cello, 9), and Victoria Ok (violin, 12).
Musicians from the Regional level are then eligible to audition for All State Orchestra in February. Last year, Ok became the first Broad Run student in our history to be an All State musician. Beginning in the fall, Victoria encouraged her peers in their journey of preparing for All State auditions, vowing she would not be the only Spartan to achieve the honor. And she was right. Adrian Cheung, Michael Chou, and Victoria Ok are VA All State Orchestra Musicians for 2021.
Sadly, the actual event, scheduled for April 2020, was cancelled. While the the students are heartbroken to be missing both their first All State event (Michael and Adrian) and their last (senior Victoria), the honor and accomplishment still shines bright. The students will be recognized by VBODA through medals and certificates mailed directly to their homes. An LCPS press release recognizing all of the LCPS All Virginia musicians will be out his month as well.

Project Graduation
Dear Senior Parents/Guardians,
2020 has been exceptionally hard on all of us, especially for your Senior students. One of the last events that many of the seniors looked forward to was Project Graduation which has always been held after graduation. Unfortunately, due to the current and ongoing restrictions, there is no way for Project Graduation to happen so we will be cancelling the event for the Class of 2020. Please know that this was not an easy decision to make as we have enjoyed organizing this event for many years for thousands of past seniors.
For those of you who purchased tickets for Project Graduation, you will be receiving a full refund.
VIRTUAL BUCKET RAFFLE:
Many of the prizes for Project Graduation were already purchased so we will be holding a LIVE Virtual Bucket Raffle and ALL Seniors will have the chance to enter to win one of the great prizes available. More information on how to enter the Live Virtual Bucket Raffle will be coming out soon.
Lastly, Project Graduation will be saying goodbye to four key volunteers: Samantha Bailey (12 years), Anna Doody (10 years), Jessica Laster (6 years), and Gail Ogle (8 years). We are disappointed that our last Project Graduation will not happen but we will be leaving PG in good hands. Marita Reidy will be stepping in as Project Graduation chair so I hope that if you have other students still at Broad Run you will consider volunteering to help her because one person cannot do this alone!
Stay safe!
