Valley Fire - Our Response

Last week was remarkable in many ways! So many of you rallied on behalf of Lake County and all those who are suffering unimaginable losses. Our gift card drive, both here at Petaluma High and crosstown at Casa Grande, has raised more than $7000. And our FFA team of teachers and students worked last weekend on a fundraiser at Tractor Supply. They have pulled together a trailer full of tack, feed and water troughs plus two truckloads of feed and clothing, as well as more than $3000 collected in additional cards and donations. This kind of giving reminds us what an amazing community we live in!

We have enterprising students who will continue to work on outreach and collection in the coming weeks. The need will be enormous and I am so proud of our students and community for recognizing the need to keep the attention shining on Lake County.

Thank you everyone!

The Club Remains at PHS!

The Battle for the Club at Ellison Field was decided early on a beautiful Friday evening at Ellison Field. The Trojans jumped out to an early 7-0 lead on the second play from scrimmage as Brendan White scampered through the Santa Rosa defense. From there, the Trojans dominated, leading to an eventual 39-13 win.

The win evens their record at 2-2 as they head into the league portion of the season. This week, we host Sonoma to open league play, then head to Piner the following week, before returning home for Homecoming v. Healdsburg.

In volleyball, the girls had a strong win at home vs. Sonoma. Girls Varsity soccer also had a solid home win versus Sonoma, and Girl's Golf took down Piner at Bodega Links. Boy's Soccer is off to a 7-1-1 start, 1-1 in league.

PLC Collaboration Continues

Each Wednesday, our staff meet in PLC (Professional Learning Community) groups. The process is to look closely at student work and assessments, with the aim of identifying essential standards and patterns of excellence in teaching. Those discussions can be rich with discovery. Each teacher is looking for avenues to successful learning - the collaboration allows us to shine light on a best practice and spread it across the school. It is a little like doctors on rounds discussing a tricky diagnosis. Together, we become better and stronger practitioners.

iPads on The Way!

Our iPad rollout set for last week was delayed because of a necessary update (iOS 9) that was causing network problems. The tech team has been working round the clock to update all the iPads. We are set for iPad distribution starting next Monday, 9/28! Students will be receiving iPads in English 9th, 10th, and 11th classes and Government/Econ 12th. Please note that students will need an Apple ID in order to activate the device. (See the video below for how to set up an Apple ID)...Thank you for your patience! We know this is a big step and that we will experience some hiccups, but we are also excited for the the new horizons ahead.

Kim Arntz Honored with State Nomination!

Congratulations to Kim Arntz, our inspired FFA leader. She has been nominated for an Honorary American FFA Degree by the State FFA Association. Nominees are traditionally recognized for creating and sustaining high-quality agricultural education programs which inspire and motivate their students to strive for success.

We can point to many reasons why, including a recent grant she successfully wrote, her 15+ years of service to Petaluma FFA, three State Champion Dairy Judging teams, and one National Champion team. And she's just plain awesome too! Way to go, Kim!

Cardiff Recognized at SHIPs Presentation

One of our many fine students, Ryan Cardiff, represented Petaluma High School last week at the SHIP (Summer High School Internship Program) Symposium at Sonoma State University. Ryan collaborated with other high school students in Sonoma County in researching the effect of acute bilateral and unilateral set protocols on muscle power and development. The program is extremely competitive and Ryan made us very proud. Here, he describes his methodology to Lee Boyes, PHS Science Chair and long time SSU instructor.
