School Counseling Connection
Sophomores September 2020
Welcome Back Class of 2023!
We are thrilled to see you after our extended break from campus. Whatever this school year brings us, we will navigate your sophomore year together. Let’s strive to thrive this year!
Sophomore year is a great time to reflect on your successes from freshman year and the areas you want/need to focus on moving forward.
Did you struggle academically in a specific course? Should you seek assistance at the start of the year to avoid the same problems this year.
Did you get involved in the La Salle Academy Community? There are numerous clubs and activities you can explore. Meeting day/time for groups will be announced in the school bulletin. If you are having a hard time connecting, see your school counselor for assistance.
Standardized Testing:
All sophomores will take the PSAT/NMSQT, during the school day, on Wednesday, October 14. In preparation for this test, School Counselors, Ms. Buehne and Mr. Finnegan distributed a student guide published by The College Board during orientation. This booklet details each section of the PSAT, provides helpful hints on how to approach specific types of questions, explains scoring, and provides a practice test all students were encouraged to complete. The PSAT measures the critical reasoning, math, and writing skills that students have developed over the course of their education.
Student’s scores, along with classroom performance, are used by our faculty to make point level recommendations for the next academic year. In addition, the English and Social Studies Departments use scores from this PSAT administration to offer some students places in Advanced Placement English and Advanced Placement United States History in their junior year.
Sophomores can find free practice on Khan Academy and they can link their PSAT 8/9 score report from last year for guided tutoring. All sophomores attended groups last year with their school counselor to assist them with linking their score report. If any student needs help and/or has questions, please see your school counselor in room 112.
