Tech Tips for Parents
As a parent, the magnitude of technology devices, apps, widgets, gizmos, you name it (literally!) may sometimes seem overwhelming. The good news is, you don't need to know everything, about every single app that's available (that is pretty much impossible; in January 2015 alone - 17,628 new apps were added)! However, it is important for you to know the basics of what's popular with our teens. (Click the blue link for up-to-date new app stats.)
Common Sense Media has put together a great article that summarizes 15 Sites and Apps Kids Are Heading to Beyond Facebook (Schryver, July 22, 2014). The author gives a brief overview of each app/website, informs why it's popular, and identifies what problems can occur when they're not used responsibly. Knowing these few details about the tools our students are using can make the difference between a positive and a negative experience for your child. (Click the blue link to read the article.)
It is very important for parents to monitor their child's internet and cell phone usage. While at school, wifi access provided through the student network is safe and secure, in accordance to the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA). CIPA requires all network access to be filtered in a public school, regardless of the device used to access it. Furthermore, students are expected to follow all guidelines in the Acceptable Usage Policy (AUP), regardless of the device they use to access the internet while on school property. Violating the terms of the policy is a violation of the student code of conduct and will result in the loss of access privileges. Please understand that we are unable to filter personal 3G/4G access available through your cellular service provider and for this reason, you should remind your child not to access the internet through any cellular data provider while on campus. If your child is connected to the school's student wifi, you will not incur data charges, and you can rest assured they are using a safe and secure connection.
Even though the school can't filter or monitor student access through personal cellular data plans, YOU CAN and YOU SHOULD! If your child has a smartphone, he/she has extensive access to the Internet through his/her mobile device. This translates to your child having convenient access to virtually any type of website: the good, the bad, and the ugly. In the "good" ole days, we could warn our kids not to talk to strangers driving white panel vans, offering candy to anyone who would help find the adorably-cute puppy that is lost! Kids can easily identify this "stranger danger" and run!!
With internet access, it's not as easy to warn our kids about possible dangers, when we don't even know ourselves, who or where they are. The internet is a very powerful tool for learning, but it is equally powerful for those would be kidnappers (cyber-bullies, identity thieves, stalkers, etc.); allowing them to troll EVERY neighborhood, in EVERY state, and in EVERY country - without ever having to pull that white, panel van out of the garage. Unfortunately, getting away from internet danger is not as easy as turning around and running to safety. It is scary, we know, that is why we urge parents to take preventive actions to keep their children safe from the unknown dangers of the internet - the sooner, the better.
Many wireless providers offer parental controls as a part of wireless packages, according to the SafetyWeb website. Contact your service provider to inquire about blocking specific types of websites and downloads. You can also find out if you can place time restrictions on your child’s cell phone to control usage. In addition, we have provided some information about a few digital tools for Parent Monitoring below.
Reminder: Buckhorn High School and the MCBOE assume no responsibility for data overage charges, theft, loss, or damage to any personal/wireless communication device.

Jonah Stevenson
Congratulations to Jonah Stevenson! Jonah auditioned on Monday, January 19th and was accepted (on the spot) to Lee University's FANTASTIC music program!!
Lee University is a Christian Liberal Arts College in Cleveland, Tennessee. Lee University's School of Music has developed into one of the finest music schools in the southeast. They have approximately 300 music majors, with about 60% of those being vocalists. In January 2013, the Lee University Festival Choir performed at the 57th United States Presidential Inauguration at the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
Jonah will be pursuing a Bachelor of Music degree in Church Music and plans to audition for the 16 member a cappella ensemble, Voices of Lee. The ensemble is characterized by a unique variety of lush vocal harmonies, high-energy patriotic numbers, fun-filled audience participation, and heartfelt gospel favorites. Voices of Lee was propelled into the international spotlight on the debut season of NBC’s the "Sing Off." Out of thousands of auditions, they were selected as one of eight groups to compete, and were featured on four prime-time NBC network episodes. After nationwide voting, Voices finished as second runner up in the “Sing Off.” We may be a little biased, but we think Jonah would make a great addition to this talented group!
We are very proud of Jonah and wish him the best of luck at Lee University!
A special thank you...
Response to Instruction Team Planning
The Buckhorn High School RtI team had a productive planning day last week. We are thankful for these dedicated educators (Mrs. Whitney Boggus, Mrs. Leah Johnson, Ms. Mallory Morring, Mrs. Kewanee Murphy, Ms. Jennifer West-Chair, and Mrs. Tracy Wilson). Through collaboration and analyzation of data, team develops effective interventions that will ultimately enhance the academic success of ALL BHS students!
Response to Instruction (RtI) refers to an instructional framework that promotes a well-integrated system connecting general, gifted, supplemental, and special education services in providing high quality, standards-based instruction and intervention that is matched to students’ academic, social-emotional, and behavioral needs. RtI combines core instruction, assessment, and intervention within a multi-tiered system to increase student achievement and reduce behavior problems.
The RtI process requires the involvement of classroom teachers, parents, students (when appropriate), building specialists, (e.g., principals, academic coaches, special education teachers, ELL teachers, counselors, gifted teachers, speech therapists) and community service providers. The ultimate purpose of the RtI process is to enhance the success of students with a variety of academic and/or behavior needs, rather than solely determine whether a student qualifies for special education services. The effectiveness of RtI is maximized through a collaborative problem-solving approach to identify student needs and implement targeted interventions. Data are utilized to measure student progress as a result of the instruction, as well as to monitor intervention integrity.

ACT/SAT Announcements
JUNIORS - CLASS OF 2016
Save the Date - Tuesday, April 28, 2015
All 11th grade students will take the ACT Plus Writing at BHS during the school day. The Alabama State Department of Education is requiring that all 11th grade students in the state of Alabama take the ACT on the selected date. Students will not be required to pay a fee for the ACT given on April 28th.
Registration will also take place prior to the actual test date at BHS, so there is no need to register online. Please keep in mind that the April 28th test date will not appear on the ACT website because this date has been selected specifically for 11th grade students in the state of Alabama.
Students will receive more information regarding the April 28th test date as we get closer to that time. A username and password for online ACT test prep will be provided to all current eleventh graders prior to the ACT test in April.
ACT study packets can be picked up in the guidance office.
The make-up date for the ACT Plus Writing assessment will be Tuesday, May 12, 2015.

A Few Reminders: Rules & Regulations
Parents, or individuals acting in that capacity, are responsible for seeing that each student under his/her care and control follows school system policy and local school rules and regulations. It is also the responsibility of parents to know such policies, rules and regulations.
Car Riders
Students are NOT allowed to walk to Winchester Road to get in a car after school. ALL cars must pull onto campus to safely pick up car riders. Students who do not follow this rule will be suspended, per Mr. Markham. Thank you for helping us keep our students safe.
Outside Food
Please remember that it is Buckhorn High School's Policy to NOT allow any outside food to be delivered to the school during regular school hours. (This policy does not apply to a 'brown bag' lunch that is prepared at home and brought to school by the student).
Checking Student Out of School
It is Buckhorn High School's policy to NOT allow student check-outs after 3:15 p.m.
Only custodial parent(s) will be allowed to check a student out of school, unless the custodial parent(s) has specifically designated someone else to check the student out of school. School officials will keep accurate records as to whom, what time, and for what reason students are checked out of school. [MCBOE 2014-2015 Code of Conduct, page 21 of 32, Approved July 10, 2014]
Student Publications
The Board of Education authorizes school officials to allow students to have student sponsored publications within the school, and expects the administration to monitor such publications to the extent that disruptions do not result from the contents. Student publications are subject to and will be expected to meet standards associated with responsible journalism. The principal and student publication sponsor are responsible for the content of such publications.
Student publications not approved by the Principal are not allowed, and the Principal shall not allow distribution of publications without prior approval. A certified person shall be appointed to be responsible for supervising student publications, and shall report directly to the Principal in the production of such publications. [Madison County Board of Education 2014-2015 Code of Conduct, page 5 of 32, Approved July 10, 2014]
Media Coverage of School Events
Occasionally local news media visit schools in Madison County to do special reports or follow up on certain news events. As a part of their coverage they often film certain aspects of the school.
It is the principal’s decision whether to allow news media to come into the schools and cover certain events. Extra precautions are taken when the media is covering a sensitive topic or event that might have a negative impact on the school, staff and students.
Parents who have concerns about their child possibly being filmed or photographed by the media should contact the principal. Principals will make every effort to accommodate the wishes of the parent, but it should be understood that it is very difficult to foresee every possible situation that might occur from media coverage of the schools and school events. [Madison County Board of Education 2014-2015 Code of Conduct, page 5 of 32, Approved July 10, 2014]
