Social Studies:
- The students will begin writing a letter and drafting a brochure to present their bid to the public to build the Stature of Liberty, The White House or Mount Rushmore. They will need to have graphics, a financial bid, complete with numbers showing what it will take for materials, labor, time, etc. They will also have to create a name for their business. Included in the brochure will be the history of the landmark they are choosing with the how and why it came to be.
- The presentations that the kids did on Plymouth, Jamestown and Roanoke, were awesome! See some examples below. :)
WE ARE WRITERS!
Congratulations to Jace and Hattie for being chosen as our Writing Stars!
Hispanic Heritage Month
We have been learning about Hispanic Heritage Month, and the students will be assigned a prominent Hispanic person that they will do research on, and make a poster board about. Seele will have a campus display for Hispanic Heritage Month in the cafeteria, with each grade contributing. We will be adding some of the student's poster boards to the display.
This has been a really exciting time for the students as they have learned about the culture and celebrations, such as, Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead). We will also be making a grade level, Ofrenda (Offering), to display in our 5th grade hallway.
Below, please read a little excerpt about Hispanic Heritage Month, and an explanation of the Ofrenda. If your student would like to participate, they may do so by, bringing pictures of family members or friends who have passed away or items that remind them of these special people. Some examples of items that they can bring to represent their special person/people are, favorite foods, pictures, items from hobbies they enjoyed, candles, etc.
- Each year, the United States honors the contributions that Latinos have made to our country with a Hispanic Heritage Month celebration that runs from September 15 to October 15. During this annual celebration, the contributions and achievements of Hispanics/Latinos in the US are honored as well as their culture and traditions.
- On August 17, 1988, President Ronald Reagan stretched the celebrations to a month, from September 15 to October 15. National Hispanic Heritage Month is observed in the United States, Canada, and Latin America. September 15 was chosen as the start date in order to coincide with the Independence Day celebrations of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile observe their independence on September 16 and September 18, respectively.
An ofrenda (Spanish: "offering") is a collection of objects placed on a ritual altar, not for worship, but for celebration, during the annual and traditionally Mexican Día de Muertos celebration.
