April is Autism Awareness & Acceptance Month
Each week, we'll be sharing a few items that may be helpful for conversations at home:
- Some students with a disability may communicate in other ways than traditional speech. Some students may use pictures, technology devices, or sign language.
- There is no cure for Autism, but families, school staff, and students can all help our students learn and communicate more effectively.
- As always, remind students that all people are different in some way and these differences should be celebrated!
Book Fair
Dear HWE Parents and Guardians,
Here are the links I shared with students this week in class. My classes will shop next week mostly during Media classes. Some classrooms were moved to earlier in the week or later due to half days and our fair ending at noon on Friday, August 29th.
First, we have our Ewallet. A safe way to send money for your child to use at our fair. If you did it last fall, be sure to reset your wallet! https://bookfairs.scholastic.com/bookfairs/parent-how-it-works.html?fairID=5127260
Secondly, we have a virtual fair option. It is a bit different than our physical fair, but a great way to allow out of town family to support your child’s love of books! (It is at the bottom of this page.) https://bookfairs.scholastic.com/bookfairs/cptoolkit/homepage.do?method=homepage&url=hickorywoods
Finally, there is a virtual flyer with some videos to watch about books! https://bookfairsfiles.scholastic.com/flippingbooks/S22/S22-2-ES-Case-Booklist/S22_2_ES_Case_Booklist.html#p=1
THANK YOU for supporting our fundraiser book fair!
Ms. Gantz

Nominations Wanted For “Kindness Matters” Award
The Walled Lake Schools Diversity Committee is seeking nominations for the “Kindness Matters Award”. We are celebrating the “Season for Nonviolence” in the Walled Lake Schools. The “Season for Nonviolence” is observed from January 30th when Gandhi was assassinated until April 4th when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated. The “Kindness Matters Award” is another aspect of our school district’s celebration of the “Season for Nonviolence.”
The “Kindness Matters Award” is intended to honor and recognize those individuals and organizations who promote peaceful and nonviolent ways to solve problems. Nominations can be made for students, staff members, parents, community members, or organizations who:
work toward the peaceful resolution of problems
teach about peace and harmony to others
serve members of the community in times of crisis
Individuals or organizations receiving this award will be honored at the Walled Lake Schools Board of Education meeting in May.
Nomination forms for the “Kindness Matters Award” are available in your school office. Please submit your nominations to your school office or to Nayal Maktari, Principal of Pleasant Lake Elementary, at NayalMaktari@wlcsd.org.
Nominations are due by Monday, April 25th.

Optional COVID testing now available at the ESC - REPEAT
The District is now offering optional COVID testing to our staff, students, and parents. Both Rapid and PCR tests are available. The testing will take place at the Educational Services Center (850 Ladd Road, Building D Walled Lake, MI 48390) on Tuesdays and Fridays from 2-7 p.m.
The COVID testing staff, provided by a third party, will be responsible for letting people in the side door on the south side of the building.
- If you have insurance, your insurance provider will be billed.
- If you do not have insurance, there is a cost of $110.00 for a PCR test and $50.00 for a rapid test - This comes as a result of the Federal Government no longer providing funding for testing.
There will be signage placed both inside and outside of the building. To set up an appointment for testing, please complete this requisition form.

Hawk Pick-Up - REMINDERS
- All drivers are expected to park ONLY in designated parking spots. Please DO NOT park anywhere that may block the path of another vehicle.
We have found that the parking lot is busiest from 3:35 - 3:55. If your schedule allows, you can plan to arrive at HWE at or after 3:55 and contend with much less traffic. Our staff is prepared to monitor our pick-up process through 4:05.
ALL drivers must use caution and drive slowly.
Avoid cell phone use in our parking lot.
Watch for pedestrians.
We all play an important role in making our arrival and dismissal routines efficient and safe.
To reduce congestion, please use bus transportation (if eligible and available).
