Station Rotation in AP Biology

During the summer curriculum summit, Dr. Bangs and Ms. Bottcher were able to develop a "Playlist" for the first 5 units in AP Biology. As part of the school-wide initiative to incorporate more blended and personalized learning opportunities, we also embedded a station rotation into each Playlist. The station rotation for unit 1 explored the properties of water. Each of the 5 stations provided students with an opportunity to dive deeply into the chemistry, behavior and importance of water. The five stations were as follows: Drops on a Penny (investigation cohesion), Milk Vortex (investigating polar and non-polar molecules), Capillary Action (investigating adhesion), Plant Adaptations (investigating plant modifications), Z-Space (investigating the chemistry of water)."

Formative Assessments Guide Instruction

Mr. Hayes uses formation assessment to guide his eight grade student to find their own entry level into the lesson. Students then work toghether to solve problems, asking questions and findig methods that work for them. Student get a chance to feel if they are comfortable with the material before moving on.

3-2-1- Countdown

Formative Assessments provide crucial information about what students understand and what they don’t. These ungraded assessments are also valuable guides for students. It can help them enhance their performance. Teachers can use them to determine if further instruction is necessary.

Try 3-2-1 COUNTDOWN this week!

This is a true test of relevant and meaningful learning. When students learn something they find useful, they're likely to want to use that learning in some way. Have students end the day with this one. Give them cards to write on, or they can respond orally. They are required to respond to three separate statements:

  • 3 things you didn't know before
  • 2 things that surprised you about this topic
  • 1 thing you want to start doing with what you've learned

zSpace Computers

Dartmouth High students are diving into the many experiences on our zSpace computers. zSpace combines elements of AR and VR to create a 3D experience that is immersive and interactive. zSpace uses 3D glasses and a stylus that is held like a pen. Students can rotate their wrist naturally as they pick up and examine objects as if they are real.

OT/PT/Sensory Rooms

Potter's OT/PT/Sensory space is taking shape day by day. Many hands have helped with this room such as OT/PT granted PTO money, administration purchased equipment, equipment shared from other buildings and donations. Custodians and maintenance staff have helped tremendously. Dr. Hunt and her students are loving their space.

Jiji

Elementary students begun the year with a new friend, Jiji the penguin. JiJi is the beloved penguin in the ST Math software games. Students help JiJi overcome obstacles by solving math puzzles — and they associate JiJi with the thrill of challenge and success. JiJi crosses the screen every time a child demonstrates understanding of a math concept, leading the student to the next challenging puzzle. ST Math is a visual instructional program that builds a deep conceptual understanding of math through rigorous learning and creative problem solving to engage, motivate and challenge students toward higher achievement. This program develops the spatial temporal (ST) part of the brain, so students are forced to move things in their mind and visualize.
