SIS April Newsletter
Spring 2023
A Note From the Principal
Every time I sit down to do the new month's newsletter I am reminded of just how quickly time passes! This is such a busy season and there is so much to get done and look forward to! April brings the completion of our ISASP test, planning for 23-24 school year, and the arrival of spring sports! (I mean, who doesn't love watching a little baseball/softball action!).
Speaking of sports, it's a busy time of year with games and end of school year activities. We'll do our best to keep you informed of all the happenings. Please expect a few more emails over the next couple of months as we work to keep you informed in a timely fashion and provide reminders. We know there's a lot going on and we don't want you or your child to miss out on any opportunities!
As always, don't hesitate to reach out if you need anything! We are here to help!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Holtz
Counselor's Corner
Dear Families,
To help make our school safe and supportive and in congruence with National Child Abuse prevention month, our students are going to be starting the Second Step Child Protection Unit. This will begin in guidance on April 17th in which we will be covering this content. Each class will have one lesson briefly touching on each of these subject areas and students will learn three types of skills:
Personal Safety. Students will learn important safety skills, such as safety with guns, sharp tools, and fire, when riding on wheels or in cars. They will also learn ways to help them decide if something is safe or not.
Touching Safety. Students will learn about safe, unsafe, and unwanted touches, and rules about touching private body parts. They’ll also learn to say no to unsafe or unwanted touches, and to tell an adult if someone breaks rules about touching private body parts.
Assertiveness. These lessons will also give students a chance to practice asking an adult for help, telling an adult about an unsafe situation, and being assertive to get out of unsafe situations.
If you have any questions about the Second Step Child Protection Unit, please contact Heather Pentico, hpentico@solon.k12.ia.us If you do not want your child to participate in these lessons, please respond to either Mrs. Pentico via email or phone or Mrs. Holtz at mholtz@solon.k12.ia.us by April 15th.
Go online to www.SecondStep.org and log in with the Activation Key: CPU5 FAM1 LYG5 to get more information about what your child is learning in the Child Protection Unit. Thank you for helping us to make our school a safe and supportive place where everyone can learn.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Heather Pentico
