Skyview Upper Elementary School

Attention 6th grade families!

This communication includes information about honors classes in seventh grade at Arcola Intermediate School. We are aware that many students and families have been awaiting this information and appreciate your patience as the requirements for honors courses have been reviewed at the district level. As we have continued to reinforce with students, the best “preparation” is to always “do your best work and put forth your best effort.”

In order to best schedule classes for our students we will be looking at a series of data points for each subject. (These data points are listed below.) Please note that 5th grade PSSA scores are included as data points. When we receive PSSA scores for 6th grade, these will be reviewed so that adjustments can be made as necessary.

Over the course of the coming months Skyview teachers will be gathering information for each student and we will share information with Arcola. Please note that all recommendations for honors courses are based on these data points. All families will receive a letter from Arcola in early June with a list of classes their child will be scheduled for in the upcoming academic year.

We hope that you find this information useful. Thank you for the support you provide your child every day!

Sincerely,

Melissa Gorla, Skyview Principal

Amy Mangano, Arcola Principal

Math Information

(This information has appeared in previous newsletter communications)

MATH

There are three courses at 7th grade: Honors Algebra, Honors Pre-Algebra and Pre-Algebra.

In order to determine which course a student qualifies for in 7th grade we will look at several data points.

In the “first round” we look at data points including: scores on common (chapter) assessments, benchmark testing scores, Math PSSA scores and scores on two (2) universal screening tests that all 6th grade students take. Students earn points on a rubric for each of these areas. Students may then qualify for the “second round” of testing (based on the number of points earned on the rubric.) Students who do not move on to the second round of testing will be recommended for Pre-Algebra. Those students moving on to the second round of testing will receive written notification.

In the “second round” of testing students who qualify take two further tests (multiple choice and open-ended.) The purpose of the second round of testing is to determine eligibility for the honors level classes. Students again earn points on a rubric for their performance on each of these tests. Based on the results and points accumulated on the rubric students are then recommended for Honors Algebra, Honors Pre-Algebra or Pre-Algebra.

At this point in time all students at Skyview have participated in the (2) universal screener tests mentioned above. The second round of testing (mentioned above) will take place on February 22 and February 24 for those students who qualify. If your child qualifies for this second round of testing you will receive written notification. Letters regarding second round testing were mailed on Tuesday 2/7 to those students who qualified.
