Dr. Koop's Newsletter
October 14, 2022
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Big thanks to the KRS parents (pictured in this newsletter) who made Walk to School Day on Wednesday so much fun! In addition, thank you to KRS parent Mr. Chris Then and additional parent volunteers for preparing for and facilitating our first KRS garden tasting of the school year!
It looks like the weather is going to be beautiful for Bottle Hill day this weekend! On Monday, October 17, 2022 schools are closed for students because teachers will be participating in professional development. Have a wonderful weekend!
Sincerely,
Dr. Kathy Koop

Safety Week - October 18, 2022 - October 21, 2022
The week of October 17th in all New Jersey public schools is School Violence Awareness week. At KRS, we designate the week as School Safety week. Some of our safety activity highlights are as follows:
- Daily safety morning announcements about knowing your address and phone number, wearing your seatbelt, helmet wearing, crossing the street, and Halloween safety.
- The Madison Police Department will present to students about Halloween safety and for the older students Internet safety.
- The Madison Fire Department will present about fire safety to the students on October 25th.
- School Safety Chain - Every student will write a safety rule that they learned during the week on a paper chain link. The links will be connected to create one KRS safety chain which will be displayed in the KRS lobby.
We are looking forward to an informative and engaging 2022 School Safety Week!
Halloween Information
Our Halloween parade will begin promptly at 1:20 PM on October 31, 2022.
- Class parties for students only will follow the parade.
- Class pictures will occur behind the school immediately after the conclusion of the parade.
- Children may bring their costumes to school and change after lunch or students may wear their costumes to school.
Halloween costumes should be school appropriate:

Please no scary clown costumes.
We love when adults wear costumes, but please no masks.

KRS Cougar Reading Challenge
The 2022-23 KRS COUGAR READING CHALLENGE BEGAN SATURDAY, OCTOBER 1!
This year-long reading challenge is completely optional and a fun way to get our students reading at home!
Each month, students should keep track of how many minutes they are reading at home on this calendar.
Those minutes can include reading you are doing for reading logs, homework, minutes spent listening to an audiobook or read aloud on the computer (such as bookflix), or minutes spent being read to by an adult. This is not an extra assignment- If you are reading for homework, include that reading here too!
Each month, there are different challenges to complete that can earn you an extra 100 minutes to add to your total!
At the end of the month, add up all of your minutes!

News from School Counselor Mr. Levine
Wow! A Giant Connect Four Game!
Through a grant from the Madison Education Foundation, a giant Connect 4 game was purchased. This was in addition to the purchase of game-size sets of Connect 4 that the Madison Education Foundation funded as well.
Connect 4 will be the backdrop of our school-wide competition that will be held later this year. In past years the school held a One-Pin Bowling contest, and a Rock, Paper, Scissors contest. This year it will all be about Connect 4. Through Connect 4 the concepts of good sportsmanship, taking turns, and winning and losing with grace will be stressed.

Guidance Lesson Highlight
Mr. Levine visited the 5th grade classrooms to conduct one of a series of lessons on screen safety and wellness. This week the theme focused on cyberbullying.
