This week at the pool...
KMSC news for 6/2/19 - 6/8/19
Our Open House Continues Today!
Summer has arrived at the Kemp Mill Swim Club!
Glorious weather beckoned on our opening day Memorial Day Weekend, promising a wonderful summer poolside. The sun was hot. The water sparkled. And the weather held up.
Didn't make it? We'll be open at 11 a.m. Sunday, June 2, the second day of our Open House weekend organized by our Membership Director Amie Wohlfarth. Please help us get the word out about our oasis in the woods by encouraging your friends and neighbors to visit.
Potential new members can spend the day poolside on us by downloading our free, one-time pass from here to tour the facilities and take a dip!
Ten-week trial memberships are on sale this weekend for $375, six-week trial memberships for $275. Trial memberships entitle a person or family to all the benefits of a full member -- swim team, swimming lessons, Raft Nights, Pizza Nights, and more. And the 10-week trial memberships can be extended at a discounted rate!
To learn more about our specials, contact Amie Wohlfarth at kmsc-membership@kempmill.org or 240-505-6659 or 240-389-KMSC (5672).
Whether you're a trial or full member, if you have children between 5 and 18 years old, you can sign them up for our swim team. And the Joeys pre-team is back!
Joeys are essentially group swim lessons for young swimmers that are not quite ready to compete but want to be on the swim team. Joeys will be run by our swim team coaches on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 4:30-5 p.m.
The practice times for the older swimmers are:
- Early afternoon: 5 p.m. - 5:45 p.m.
- Late afternoon: 5:45 p.m. - 7 p.m.
- Nightcrawlers: 8 p.m. - 9 p.m. (for older swimmers, a more serious workout)
The team already has started practices and time trials will be this morning at 8 a.m. (the pool will open for the rest of us at 11 a.m. as usual). But you still can register here at its website.
Team fees can be found here on the team's website.
New for the 2019 season: Does your child want to be on the team, but is going away to camp? The team has created a prorated fee schedule for swimmers who would like to be on the team but are unable to participate for the full season. Contact the Team Rep for details at kempmillswimteam@gmail.com.
President's Corner
Welcome back, everyone!
We've had great weather so far to start our season, but when there’s thunder and lightning these are our safety rules:
The pool must be cleared for 30 minutes after thunder is heard, and that the deck must be cleared for 30 minutes after lightning has been sighted. The pool also must be cleared if it is raining so hard that the bottom of the pool isn't clearly visible.
If you're unsure about the pool's status during inclement weather, please call the clubhouse at 301-593-7506. When possible, Lighthouse Pool Management, Inc. staff will post a notice when the pool is closed for thunder/lightning and when that closure would be lifted.
Just a reminder about our operating hours until school gets out (June 14th):
- Mon.-Fri. 4 p.m. - 8 p.m.
- Sat.-Sun. 11 a.m. - 8 p.m.
We'll switch to longer hours June 15 after the public schools have closed for the summer:
- Mon.-Thurs. 11 a.m. - 9 p.m.
- Fri. 12 p.m. - 9 p.m.
- Sat.-Sun. 11 a.m. - 9 p.m.
Another reminder: The "last whistle" is blown 15 minutes before the entire facility closes. We expect swimmers to leave the pool promptly at this whistle, and to exit the deck through the clubhouse (not through the emergency gate near the Snack Bar) no later than closing time. Our Lighthouse Pool Management, Inc. staff must clean up and prepare for the next day's shift, and some tasks cannot be done until members and guests clear the facility.
Our youngest members are probably more than a little ready for summer fun! For their safety, please review with them our operating rules, particularly regarding running on the deck (NO! Don't do it!!) and using the slide and diving board. Injuries are no fun!
We've cleaned out and reorganized our storage areas. Please be reminded that our storage areas are only for club and swim team property and supplies, and that they may be accessed only by staff. We haven't the space to store items on members' behalf.
We also cannot keep lost-and-found items indefinitely, and will do a purge at the end of each month, or whenever the bin gets over-full.

2019-2020 KMSC President
Raft Nights are back!
We'll be holding our first Raft Night TONIGHT, Sunday, June 2, beginning at 5 p.m. Bring your own raft. Make sure it's not so large that the lifeguards can't see under it from their perches above the pool! This rule is for your safety.

New Flooring Spruces Up Ladies Room
The idea to install this flooring came from one of our new board members, Shana Zipkin Siesser, who researched options and convinced us to try it out.
Operations Director Bob Carnevale did the hard work of crawling around on the floor, cutting and sizing the foamy tile to fit, with help from Noam Parness and Tim Shelton. We owe them!
We will assess the flooring for durability and ease of maintenance over the next season or two, and if it does well and we have the resources we will consider installing it in the men's room as well. Let us know what you think!
Special Thanks Are Due These People
Here are some of the crew who helped clean up around the pool before we opened:
(Left photo) Board member Eileen Shelton (center) spent two days painting our impossibly tall light poles with the help of her family (L-R): Tim, who helped Bob Carnevale (not pictured) lay the new floor covering, James (13), Maggie (11), and Thomas(13);
(Middle photo): Juliet Mellow tackled deck debris with the help of Chris Farrell (not pictured);
(Right photo) Swim Team Rep Alyssa Parness (at far right) and her family (L-R): Noam, who spent many hours crawling around in the ladies' room helping lay the tile as his family scrubbed the refrigerators; Atara (13), Ariella (11), and Aviva (9).
Please show them and our other helpers Sherri Spritzer, Jonathan Aigon, who was part of the floor installation crew, and Jonathan Bryson your appreciation when you see them poolside!
