Meaning of Media Literacy

I believe that the media is how you connect things in the world outside of yourself. Being able to have a connection with other things is important in almost everyday life. This is how a lot of people get information. Many people are able to improve their life based of the information they get from the media. Media is the center of so many people’s lives. All of the social networking people use on their phone is a type of media. Also the television that people watch is a huge form of media. Most people in the U.S. can’t go a day without using their phone, listening to the radio, being on the internet or watching some sort of T.V. This show the presence that media has on the world.

I think being media literate is how well you are able to connect and analyze the readings. I believe that being able to fully understand the any form of writing is what being media literate is all about. The more you are able to connect the things you read to the real world, the better you will understand it and the more media literate you are.

Life will be so much easier if you are able to be media literate. Comprehending will be so much easier. Also being able to get your point across through a form of media will make life simpler. Media literacy is one of the most important things this day and age. Without it during this time period, you will fall.

Change

I will do my part in changing the world by recycling, being more careful with my water, and be mindful of the environment around me. Recycling is one of the easiest things to do to help the environment. I never took the time to make sure I recycled things like plastic bottles and I would just throw it in the trash. However, I’m going to stop that and be more mindful of the things I throw away and put them in the right spots. I am also take shorter showers and try to use less water when I can. There is only a small percentage of actual water that is drinkable and I don’t want to take that for granted. I am going to make sure I don’t waste our water. It is a valuable resource and should be used in a well manner. Lastly, I am going to try to fix things as I see an issue. An example would be if I see something on the ground, I would make an effort to pick it up. I am also no going to litter and will tell my family to take more care of the environment as well. It is a team effort to preserve the environment.

T-Mobile Commercial Precis

In the T-Mobile commercial (2016), T-Mobile asserts the fact that their LTE coverage has increased and has even surpassed Verizon's LTE coverage. They used Steve Harvey by having him make fun of his own mistake, which he made at the Miss Universe pageant, to express their point claiming that the numbers that Verizon show in their commercials are last year numbers; T-Mobile states that they have increased their LTE coverage by double which leads to them passing Verizon's LTE coverage. By using Steve Harvey and bringing up his mistake at the pageant, T-Mobile shows that Verizon is wrong just like Steve Harvey is in order to demonstrate to people that their coverage has had great improvement and that they should switch over to T-Mobile. They open the commercial with the same beginning as Verizon's commercial, but then bring Steve Harvey out to create a humorous tone; their target audience is anybody that has a phone, but more specifically those who have Verizon as their cell phone provider.

Advertisement on Society

I see advertisement as a way that many different corporations try to manipulate a society. You will see advertisement on almost anything that you do. No matter if it is scrolling through some type of social media on your phone, watching T.V., or even just driving down the highway. Advertisement is rarely used to promote positive things and only seems to just try to appeal to the consumer. If people promoted more positive things, this world would be a better place. However, advertisement is used in a negative light. There is so much power through advertisement and it has a huge impact on society. I believe that these advertisements reflect what our society believes in. Commercial are there to appeal to the consumers and if the consumer was cool with the beating of women, then they would use that to help promote their product. For the most part, commercials are not moral when it comes to promoting a product, so anything that parts of the society is cool with is what will be showed. As kids get older and see these commercial that promote negative things, they will think is acceptable and lead out society down a wrong path. Advertisement needs to support more positive things in this world.

The media is a very clever network that makes a lot of money trying to manipulate people and families. They try to act like they appeal to our needs and that they want to solve issues, but all they want is to make money. They don’t care about how they are affecting our society and our children. A perfect example would be with Coca Cola. They make it seem like they are trying to solve the obesity issue in America; however, they won’t sacrifice anything that could decrease their sales. Over the years, I have personally witnessed the media manipulating different product to make it seem more appealing to the customer and it completely frustrates me. When people hear lies through advertisement on some sort of media platform, they make think this false information is true. An example would be a family believing that Kellogg’s cereal is the best choice of breakfast for their child to eat in the morning. To a person that doesn’t do their own research, they will believe that information is true; in the long run, this is hurting the kid and the parents don’t even know. Diabetes are becoming present in younger generation than before and part of this reason goes with the lack of information provided in the effects of sugars that are in these cereals and drinks. The media needs to be more informative and be completely honest with the consumers, so our society can be a better place.

Apple shouldn’t fix. I don’t believe that anybody’s security should be compromised to find a few people. People already don’t have complete trust in the government. If Apple follows through with what the government want, then I believe so much confidence would be lost in Apple products as well as in the government. So many people have IPhones and the government wants to put all of these people at risk. People shouldn’t have to worry about someone else getting into their phone. Personally, I wouldn’t want anybody to have any type of access to my phone. Everything that I have on it is private and is personal to me. I have faith in apple products and I do have some faith in the government. Both of those things may be compromised if Apple follows through with what the government wants. There must be a better solution than to have all IPhones compromised. Our country is built on freedom and it shouldn’t be compromised. It is the government’s duty to protect that right, not to limit our freedom. IPhones is a great product and has a right to do what it wants with its own company. To make them do anything they don’t want to do is against their rights and that is not what America stands for.

I do not believe that reporters should have to submit their work to the government so they can determine if it’s a threat to the country, especially in the U.S. This country is built around freedom and to have the government manipulate what you say is taking away your right to express your opinion. I personally believe that people should always stick up for what they believe in. There are times when the government isn’t doing what is best for all people. An example would be during slavery. Slavery shouldn’t be acceptable for any reason; however, the government was slow to make a change. There also could be a chance that corrupt officials manipulate the information they are given. Like in the movie V, the government would manipulate different things that happened. This kept people from realizing the truth and kept them living in fear. The information that you read and hear has a huge impact on a society. Giving the government that kind of control can only lead a country downhill. The government shouldn’t have the power to do what they want with the news and have people be ignorant to the truth. The people should have the right to know everything that is happening and reporters should have the right to submit their work without showing it to the government. It is hard to know who is and isn’t corrupt in a government. They may at first only use the reporter information to see if it a threat to the country. However, I feel as if that the government would begin to abuse their power. There is a lot of power in social media and if it is put in the wrong hands, bad things will happen. It is important that people don’t give the government too much power, especially in the U.S. This country was built around freedom and it should stay that way.

Get It Straight

I learned a lot about these candidates. One of the biggest things I learned that these politicians lie a lot. Only a fraction of anything they say is true. This is scary because they can easily manipulate the masses. A lot of people in America don’t do research to back up what the politicians say, so they would believe almost anything. Once you go into detail and do fact checks with what they say, then you will understand the truth. Trump compared the wall he wants with Mexico to the Great Wall of China. He made it seem that it would be easy because the Chinese people were able to build it 2,000 years ago and that it was 13,000 miles. The thing is that he didn’t explain how long it actually took to build the Great Wall. Many people died building that wall and it is still today being worked on because it is a big tourist attraction. The truth is that the wall would be very difficult to build and would take a lot of time. We can’t rely on the media to tell the full truth either. The media will do anything for ratings and publicity, so you never know what they may manipulate to improve their ratings. That shows how important it is to do your own research. The media has the power if you don’t check to see what they said is valid. Politicians also get away with many things because people choose not to do their research and believe everything they say. If people researched everything these politicians said, then some of the candidates would lose a lot of votes because they aren’t speaking the complete truth. They either stretch the truth or straight up lie and neither of those things should be acceptable from a potential president.

Politifact

"The Great Wall of China, built 2,000 years ago, is 13,000 miles (long)."

-Donald Trump

Donald Trump said this on Wednesday, March 2nd, 2016 in remarks after the Super Tuesday balloting.

Donald Trump said this to show that if a 13,000 mile long wall could be built back then, then one only 1,000-2,000 miles long really isn’t that bad.

In order to be informed about this situation, you must know how long it actually took to build the Great Wall Of China. The Wall has been worked on for ages. It even gets worked on nowadays to help with tourism. 8 dynasties participated in building this wall along with the people of the warring states period.

I overall feel that this wall would be a waste of money. There are so many bigger issue that the illegal immigrants. The illegal immigrants are a problem, but I’m saying that the money we would use to help build the wall could benefit something else. Especially since Mexico said they weren’t going to pay for the wall, it will be up to the citizens of the U.S. to pay for the wall. I believe that it is important that we solve domestic issues first. This country has starving kids, terrible communities, and lack of resources in areas. Once we solve all the internal issues that this country has, then maybe we can consider building a wall, but until then, we need to focus on solving these issues.

"Two-thirds of our kids can’t read at grade level,"

-Marco Rubio

He said it at a campaign event on Feb. 18, 2016, in Greenville, S.C.

Marco Rubio said this to show the importance of school and to have our kids learning at a higher level. By stating this nation’s struggle when it comes to our ability to read, it makes people want to do something about it.

To be informed, you must understand the truth behind the reading level of the kids in the U.S. Also, it is important it has on our society.

I feel that the reading issue in America must improve. The kids are our future and the only way to have the best future possible is to have our kids smart and capable of making smart decisions.

"Gun violence is by far the leading cause of death for young African American men, outstripping the next nine causes of death combined."

-Hillary Clinton

She said this to show the affect guns have on the society. Her goal is to limit the amount of guns we have out on the streets. That statistics helps prove her case by showing the bad side to guns.

To truly understand the gun issue, you must be impacted by it in some way or to know the true effects guns can have on a society

I agree with Hillary Clinton when it comes to the gun situation. I feel that it should be strictly regulated. Guns are only used for harm and it has been the reason for so many deaths of innocent people

"Today, the United States has, sadly, one of the lowest voter turnouts of any major country on earth."

-Bernie Sanders

He said this to point out how important it is to vote and how us as Americans do a terrible job at it. He believes by pointing this out that more people will see that it is an issue and begin to vote.

To be informed, you must know the true numbers of how many people vote. Voting is very important and we

I feel that the U.S. takes voting for granted and we need to take voting more seriously.

Rebellion

These rebellions are so powerful because it shows the strength of a group of people when they work together. Many times people get used to a situation and forget the power that they have. These types of rebellions gives hope to people that are being oppressed. An idea is a great thing; however, it doesn’t go anywhere unless people work to pursue that idea. The more people that are there to follow idea, the better chance it will work. The beauty of the rebellions is that people will believe that they will see better days and don’t settle for the life they are living.

In the Stono Rebellion, a slave known as Jemmy rattled 20 slaves together. They were tired of the mistreatment and unfairness and felt that there needed to be a change. African Americans were put into some unfavorable situations and it wasn’t necessarily their fault. They were looked down upon and were given no respect and Jemmy had enough. He knew things need to change and knew other slaves felt the same way. He inspired them that they could get free and get revenge on the people that did this to them, so they went off on their journey killing whites and trying to reach freedom.

This rebellion was able to gain more participants through victories. Many slaves saw liberty and revenge in the rebellion, so they decided to join. Even though some slaves stayed back, the rebellion ended up reaching to about 100 people. They were standing up to the whites even though the odds were stacked against them. As they went around shouting liberty in their “Liberty” in their native tongue, it gave hope to slaves and they felt they would be able to live as a free person. The vision of hope was enough to get people to join the rebellion.

In today’s political issue, I see a lot of protesting and uprisings when it comes to Donald Trump’s rallies. Many people fear what would happen to this country if he became president, so they use their right to protest. The sad part is that many of these protests end in violence. Many people disagree with Trump and the best way to keep him from president is peaceful protest. Violence isn’t the answer and it is only dividing the country. It is important not to lose yourself in these protests and remember your morals. These protests shouldn’t change the person you are.

Government Wins

Winston’s society is a place where the government surveillance is at its fullest. Snowden realizes that our society today is implementing some of the type of surveillance that Winston goes through. However, here in the U.S. we are not getting in trouble for any type of facial expressions or talking to somebody consistently. Snowden was only trying to do what was right and sharing his knowledge on the secrets of the government. Personally, if someone was doing secretly stalking me, I would want to know about it. I am glad that he points this out because it is important for the American citizens to know the truth. Even though Snowden faces criminal charges, he was able to leave the country. However, Winston would never get that opportunity. Winston is stuck in a place controlled by the government. He has to be careful of everything he does and he can’t expose the government on any of their lies or he will get vaporized. That’s the big difference between Winston’s and Snowden’s situation. The government has too many ways to spy on their societies in both situations. The key difference is freedom. However, the more we post stuff on the internet and the less privacy we have, the less freedom we will have. It is important that we cherish our privacy. Snowden noticed our privacy was being taken for granted and decided to try to make a difference. I feel that it is crucial to not let the government have too much control over our privacy. The more control they have, the easier it would be to transition to a society that Winston lives in and that is a terrible place to leave. People must be more careful of what they post on the internet and should know that they are always being watched.

Is Technology Heaven Sent

I believe that science and technology developments are a blessing and a curse. The possibilities of technology are endless. We went from inventing a light bulb, to inventing HD T.V.’s. It is a blessing because it has such great effects on our lives and making it easier. There is now technology they help the blind see and the deaf hear. It is also easier to spread information and keep people aware of the situations happening in the world. However, through all of the good that technology does for us, it hurts our society in many ways. One big way that it hurts us is through relationships. People rely too heavily on social media and forget how to talk to someone face to face. People spend hours playing on their phone or gaming system when they could be doing something to better their lives or even just playing outside and getting fresh air. Overall, I believe science and technology is sent from heaven as long as we use it to better our society. I think Orwell means that science and technology is something that makes life more convenient for the people. The lack of freedom to experiment and wars have stopped the growth of science and technology in Oceania.

Freedom vs. Happiness

I believe that you can have happiness with freedom. With freedom, you have the choice to live life how you want as long as you aren’t lazy. If you work hard for what you want, you will eventually get the happiness you are looking for. I don’t understand how someone can find true happiness with living a life that is not their own. You are not able to do what you want and live free, so I don’t understand how they can necessarily be happy. The beauty of living in the U.S. is that you can be born in a depressing environment and find happiness. Life is what you make it. However, many people don’t understand that. Some people are cool with the government having control over the people. I felt that it was really important that Snowden did what he did. The people should know the truth and that their freedom is being compromised. I am a person that is grateful for my freedom and feel that it is a god given right. I don’t agree with Winston. I feel like people are the most happy when they have control over their own life. The ability to be in charge of your own decisions should be what makes people happy.

Smore #13 Gas Lighting

Gas lighting is a form of mental abuse where the victim is made to doubt his own memory, sanity, or perception. It is so easy to gas light in America because people show the lack of determination to find the truth. Many Americans have short-term memory and will just accept what anybody says. It is amazing how many politicians, actors, and artists lie to their fans and followers. People are so quick to take in anything that these people say and forget about all the controversial things they have done or said. One of the biggest gas light situations is in China. In Tiananmen Square, the Chinese government tries to make it seem like nothing happened and it was peaceful, but through evidence we all can see that wasn’t the case. People get punished in China for saying anything about the incident. People erase that moment out of their mind in China out of fear. That was a tough time in China it the government is abusing their power to have it gone from everybody’s mind. One way you can stop gas lighting is by never forgetting the past. The past is what makes you who you are and it is important to always remember it.

Smore #14 part 1

To ensure that the addiction of social media doesn’t become a permanent reality, the parents must first be prepared to stop it. Parents are now beginning to become addicted to technology and are setting a terrible example for their kids. It is vital that parents instill to their kids the importance of face to face relationships and family values. I suffer from this too. My parents and I hardly ever sit down as a family and talk. We are always doing our own separate things. I believe that the parents are the key of keeping this from becoming a permanent reality as long as they make sure that their kids recognize that strong relationships and family values are a priority in life.

I believe our society is addicted to social media. There are so many different social media platforms and more is always getting created, so it is extra hard to pull back. The need to stay relevant for people is getting out of hand. They feel like they must always be on social media and must post everything about their life. This is only making the addiction worse. People would rather be on their phone playing a game or on some social media platform than go outside and play with their friends; parents aren’t helping the situation. Some parents are on their phone almost as much as their kids and this is only encouraging the addiction. The only way to control this issue is by pulling back from our phone; however, we feel like we must always be on our phone, so it would take great discipline for this to change.

I believe the best way to use the power of social media and using it for good is to only use it for the things you need. I believe the only things you should use social media and technology for is work, calling people that you can’t reach in person, and other conveniences like music and GPS systems. Anything else, you should be able to use without social media. People are getting to a point where they can’t go an hour without their phone. I am going to only use my phone for things I need and maybe to post positive motivational things to keeps other people’s spirits high.

Reflection

As the semester went on, I began to see the importance of media literacy even more. In the beginning of the semester, I understood the meaning of media literacy; however, I truly recognize why it plays such a huge part in our society. Without media literacy in this day in age, you are practically useless. Almost everything now a day’s revolve around media, so it is incredibly important that you are media literate.

I learned a lot from this class. I was able to improve my ability to annotate as well with learn more about current events. I enjoyed the CNN news a lot and it felt good to know what was happening in the world. I also enjoyed 1984 even though I didn’t like the ending; however, it was really cool how we were able to separate our class into the different sections like the people were in the book. We had proles, inner party members, and the thought police. This helped me get a better understanding of the book and I really enjoyed it.

This class was different than other language arts classes because it prepared us for college and the real world more. Being able to keep up with the current news and learning tactics that would make us a better college student was important. In this language arts class, we also focused more on media and the affects it has on society. We started off the class learning about media literacy and now we are able to use this information to better our future. Social media and other media outlets are incredibly popular in this day and age, so this course did a good job of showing the impacts.

In the future we could do more Socratic seminars. As well with going a little more into detail when it came to annotating and précis. Besides those things the class was really good.
