Principal's Message
During the second quarter of the school year, our students will continue their global studies. Teachers will use the North Carolina Standard Course of Study and integrate learning opportunities focused on access to clean water around the world. Grade levels will share the text, The Water Princess by Susan Verde. Each grade level will provide exciting projects where students will apply their creativity and critical thinking skills.
Kindergarten
Students will create water filtration systems using coffee filters.
First
Our first grade students will create water filters together in small groups Students will test the filters and observe which filter works the best.
Second
Our second grade students will experiment with different materials for building filtration systems.
Third
Our third grade students will work in small groups to build either a water filtration device or a more convenient way to carry and transport water. This will be done as a STEM challenge using various materials. The students will create a Flipgrid showing how their device to filter or carry water works. QR Codes to the Flipgrid videos and pictures of the students building their devices will be featured on the bulletin board.
Fourth
Our fourth grade students will design their own water filtration system. Students will work to test the filter by running dirty water through and examining the result. Food coloring will be added to the dirty water to represent chemical pollution. Students will become aware of how pollution moves through the soil and how it may be naturally filtered.
Fifth
Our fifth grade team will link our global standards with state reading and science standards. Students will learn about a rainforest in Belize and various other ecosystems all over the world. Then students have a STEM project to build an ecosystem in a shoebox. They will have a section of their project that explains how clean water is accessed in those ecosystems and what may threaten the water in those environments.

Bring Back Our Library Campaign!
Part of the PUE mission is to ensure each student has access to a variety of learning resources, many of which are maintained in the school's wonderful Media Center. In recent years more than an insubstantial number of Media Center resources have been lost as a result of student transitions, damage and obsolescence. In line with its mission to continuously support the school, the PUE PTA feels the need to replenish these resources is imperative, and financial help is needed. If you are able, please consider a recurring or one-time donation to help support this integral aspect of our Panthers' educational experience! Donate here!
Media Center Volunteers
Parents can come at 8:15-8:45am or 3:45-4:15pm. You are welcome to bring your child to stay in the media center BUT they must be a current PUE student. The front office will have the computer set up so you can register as a new volunteer or reactivate your volunteer status and obtain your Criminal Record Check clearance for 2021-2022. Sign-up for the 2nd quarter here. If you have any questions, please email Media Chair Victoria Williams. Thank you for volunteering!
Did you know that October is International Walk to School Month?
From PTA Wellness Team: Why is International Walk to School Month celebrated? Walking to school should be a one day or one month event, but something children and families do on a regular basis. Even though PUE is not a walkable school, there are ways our families can promote safe walking and bicycling every day. A wonderful program called Safe Routes to School is doing just that throughout North Carolina and around the country. Safe Routes to School (SRTS) programs are sustained efforts by parents; school staff and administrators; representatives from law enforcement, public health, and advocacy; community leaders and local, state, and federal governments to improve the health and well-being of children by enabling and encouraging them to walk and bicycle to school. SRTS programs examine conditions around schools and conduct projects and activities that work to improve safety and accessibility and reduce traffic and air pollution in the vicinity of schools. As a result, these programs help make bicycling and walking to school safer and more appealing transportation choices thus encouraging a healthy and active lifestyle from an early age. To learn more about Safe Routes to School and strategies for turning your Walk and Bike to School Day events into long-term efforts to promote safe walking and bicycling every day, visit saferoute info.org.
*PUE is not in a walkable area, but we encourage you and your family to walk to your bus stop or take in your day to walk around your neighborhood. Walking is a great activity!
