Santa, Reindeer, and The Night Before Christmas
This week we combined writing and reading workshop with holiday literature. We compared and contrasted stories, looked for main and secondary characters and settings, discovered the problems and solutions, determined author's purpose, and rated our stories. Once we worked through the reading workshop, we set out to write about our stories by creating new versions, telling our opinions, and creating books to share with our families! Our topics of study were reindeer, Santa, Christmas Eve, and the joy of the season. The campers worked so very hard to create and write very special stories! There Santa disaster stories had many 'oh no' moments! The campers found out other animals could be considered for pulling the sleigh based on their friends' opinions! It was very easy for the campers to find the joy i their lives and to want to share it with their families! Theses books are meant to have families add extra thoughts of joy as well. Many campers added extra pages so all their family members could add a joyful moment! It was a wonderful week of connected learning in our literacy block!
I hope you found your camper's opinion folder this week! It will make for some great reading over the holidays!

Multiplication
We got our triangle flash cards out and in our pouches this week. You will notice some have arrays and some do not. The cards with arrays are in the fact families with products that are higher or may be considered more difficult. The campers can work on any of these cards for beginning practice. As we begin to concentrate on specific families or problems, we will let you know!
The numbers 0 and 1 are special numbers in multiplication. We drew pictures and took a close look at how they work this week. 0 x any number = 0 and 1 x any number = that number. We also discussed how counting in patterns helps learn multiplication so that the answers to the x 2, x 3, x 5, and x 10 can be seen more quickly because many campers can count by these numbers. We will dig into multiplication more when we return.

The first number tells how many groups.
The second number tells what number.
