Gilbert High School's Newsletter - April 3, 2020
Principal's Message
April 3, 2020
Dear Tiger families,
I hope you are well and healthy. We'll have a relatively short newsletter update for you today. I want to make sure we keep you updated as best we can during this stressful time.
We know that Governor Ducey and Superintendent of Public Instruction Hoffman announced earlier this week that schools are closed through the end of the school year. This necessarily leads to many questions from students, parents, teachers and staff.
Let's start with Remote Learning. Remote Learning started in earnest this past Monday March 30, 2020. As of this writing your child should of been contacted by all of their teachers at this point and should have opportunities to help raise their grades. What has been a traditional brick and mortar school experience is now Remote Learning. Please help our faculty and make sure you are supporting the expectation that our students are participating and giving their best effort in these unusual circumstances. I appreciate your support with these efforts, and as a working parent myself, I sympathize totally with all of you, as well! :)
Please make sure you review the Gilbert Public Schools student expectations that have been communicated home in a separate email as well as below in this newsletter. Your continued support for these expectations will help all of our students with their learning and online behavior. This all is an unusual challenge and we need everyone's help to make sure our students are safe and cared for in their Remote Learning environments.
There are also many questions regarding Graduation and Baccalaureate. As of now, no official decision has been made about these important and seminal events in our school calendar. Honoring our amazing senior class is something the school year is literally built around here at GHS. District will be communicating at some point to families as we work to determine how best to proceed for these important events. We will then followup, as well, to make sure everyone in our campus community is informed about updates, as well.
We have had a number of requests for student personal belongings, which at this point is mostly just gym clothes and sneakers. We have worked with families to make sure musical instruments all went home, as well as some art pieces that are critical for AP and Advanced Art students. We distributed the majority of our senior caps, gowns and announcements prior to Spring Break. Still, we have a few left to distribute. We will be in touch in the next few business days for distributing our remaining caps, gowns and announcements for graduation. Senior parents, keep a close eye out for communication regarding that distribution plan. For everything, please be patient with us until May as we work out the logistics of how to safely bring folks to campus to get their gym clothes, return library books and class texts, etc. We will communicate that plan as soon as we have it at the ready.
Here are some tips I'd like to pass along on helping teenagers through these stressful times.
Just a reminder that school is closed April 10 & 13, so please do not expect communications from GHS and our teachers on those days. Also, please note GPS Tech Services Parent Support will be closed those two days. Meal services will provide extra meals for families on Thursday, April 9 and will be open Monday, April 13.
Thank you everyone. Take care. Be safe. Wash those hands.
Sincerely,
Christopher Stroud
Principal

GPS Student Expectations for Remote Learning
COVID-19 school closures have significantly impacted all our lives. This situation, however, has not altered the Gilbert Public Schools’ desire to provide a quality educational environment for students. It is extremely important that all students remember that, while utilizing remote learning opportunities, it is still their responsibility to interact appropriately with teachers and other students at all times. This means that, although we are not physically together, students must treat each other with respect and understanding, and are accountable for their behavior.
If a student is determined to not be following appropriate behavioral expectations as listed in the link below, they are likely to receive consequences, which could include removal from remote learning. Please be a team player and help us work together through this challenging time!
Parents and guardians, please review the student expectations below with your child.
