Welcome Back- Make a Fresh Start
ELL Updates- Grading
English learners (ELs) should be graded based on their academic progress at their level of English Language Proficiency (ELP).
A student’s ELP is determined by the ACCESS for ELs assessment, which takes place every year in the Spring. The purposes of the assessment are 1) to monitor the ELs’ growth in English language skills, 2) to determine instructional needs based on their proficiency level, and 3) to determine if they are ready to be exited from ESOL. The expectation is that every student will grow by at least one level of language proficiency within a school year.
ACCESS for ELs assesses students’ level of language proficiency in four domains: listening, speaking, reading, and writing; and provides them with a score between 1 (beginner) – 6 (proficient). The Can-Do Descriptors (in Canvas) provide examples of what ELs can do in each of the language domains at various levels of language proficiency. (ACCESS for ELs scores may be found in Focus, under Test History.)
During instruction, provide ELs with scaffolds and differentiations that will enable them to comprehend and produce work aligned with the grade level standards at the appropriate level of language proficiency. For example, if a student scored at a level 2 in writing, then he/she already has the writing skills listed in the Can-Do-Descriptors document for that level, and now has to master the skills listed at level 3. In this situation, the EL student should complete work at level 3 with scaffolds and supports put in place, which will be slowly removed as the students progresses in their skills.
Teachers must document accommodations, instructional strategies, and grading provided at the proficiency level:
- Lesson Plans- document scaffolds, differentiations, and accommodations provided in the instruction and assessment.
- The ELA Modules have information about scaffolding by level so you make reference to those in your lesson plans. More ELA support ideas are on this Canvas page: https://pcsb.instructure.com/courses/10431/pages/ela .
- Math support ideas are on this Canvas page: https://pcsb.instructure.com/courses/10431/pages/math
- Science support ideas are on this Canvas page: https://pcsb.instructure.com/courses/10431/pages/science
- FOCUS- In gradebook under each assignment or assessment include a note explaining the accommodation and grading by proficiency level.
- When completing quarter, semester or final grades, select CODE 16 in the comment sections to indicate there has been an accommodation in instruction and grading.
A grade of D or F may only be assigned to an ELL if he/ she received appropriate accommodations and strategies in instruction and assessment and the student demonstrated no progress towards achieving the standards and grade level expectations at his/ her level of English proficiency. This includes students classified as LY (currently in ESOL) and those classified as LF (exited ESOL within the past two years).
