My College & Career Story
Mrs. Pizzuto, LMC Director, Technology Coach
Why did I choose to be a teacher?
University of Illinois at Chicago, BA, Teaching of English
I also took some graduate school courses to be endorsed in teaching reading.
Muskogee High School, Muskogee OK
I feel like my experience at MHS gave me many of the tools I needed to work at BHS, even though they spoke with a southern twang.
When I came home, I returned with an accent. It still comes back when I visit. I taught summer school at Oak Lawn High School that year, and the students laughed at my accent.
Rochelle Township High School, Rochelle, IL
Rochelle was and still is a school that is big into agriculture. I could not believe that two hours away from where I grew up, a community celebrated FFA week (Future Farmers of America) and had a "Drive Your Tractor to School" day, along with Cow Pie Bingo during homecoming week.
The part of the building where my classroom was was built in 1908, which meant it was very cool with hardwood floors, built-in cabinets, and actual chalk boards. It also meant no air conditioning!
Bolingbrook High School, Bolingbrook IL
in that classroom, I got to do cool things, like switch out my desks for tables and paint on my walls, as they were going to be demolished anyway in renovations for the new middle school. At the old building, I was a theater producer, sponsored the literary magazine, wrote the parent newsletter, helped with prom and student government, and worked part time jobs over the summer. One of my proudest moments at the old BHS was getting a poet to come in during Teen Read Week. I was already a librarian; I just didn't know it.
Northern Illinois University, MS Ed, Instructional Technology
I achieved a 4.0 (straight A's) in grad school, in spite of a car accident in 2009 that shattered most of the bones in my right foot. Because I am very clumsy, I traveled around school on a knee scooter instead of crutches.
LMC Director, Bolingbrook High School
When I started in the library in 2007, I had no idea how much I would love the other aspects of the library, especially helping others with technology. I really love empowering both staff and students to feel confident in what they can do with technology, giving them tools to be successful again and again, and not just fixing what isn't working. While I don't teach full classes every day, there are at least 100 teachable moments in the library every day, which is AWESOME!
