Happy Groundhog's Day!
Champion Students
If you are not sure how to start this with your student, you can tell them that you noticed they have struggled with some of their grades in the past, that you care about them, and want to help support them to ensure they pass all of their classes.
Stay tuned to see how we did with our Champion Student passing rate for semester 1.

Message from our APs
During the week of February 3-7 our EL students will be completing their Access test. Students will be engaged in listening, reading, speaking and writing assessments that provide valuable information with educational programming. Students will miss class during the week and we ask that teachers connect with each student and accommodate missed work when they return as they will be working hard on their test.
Conferences
All teachers will be having dinner in the cafeteria from 5:15 - 5:45. Thank you to the social committee for organizing this opportunity for us to come together.
Let's Get to Know...
Emma Sill, from our Health Science department. Emma has been in education for 6 years, 3 years as a nurse, 3 years as a teacher. Emma grew up in Mankato and is a West graduate. She swam for the University of North Dakota for two years before coming back to finish her nursing degree. She teaches during the school year and works as a nurse in the summer. Emma is married to Kai Sill and they have a beautiful one year old girl named Svea (Svay-ah).
Sam Stier, from our social studies department. This is Sam's 7th year in education and his first year at West. Sam was born in Mankato, moved to Rochester, and grew up in Austin, MN. He went to Bethany Lutheran College where he played baseball and earned his degree. He taught six years at Waterville Elysian Morristown where he was the head baseball coach and offensive coordinator for football. Sam has two sisters and two brothers. His older sister passed away when she was young and his younger sister is exactly 10 years younger, nearly to the date - July 12 is her birthday, his is the 13th. Both of his younger brothers are also exactly ten years and one day apart. He and his wife, Katie, have two little girls - Blakely Rae and Everly Kae.
Michelle Peterson, from our English department. Michelle has been teaching for 10 years. Her first year was at East as a MSU Fellow. Then she was hired at West. Michelle grew up in Sioux Falls. Her mother grew up in Chicago, her father grew up on a ranch in South Dakota. She has always been grateful for the diverse perspective they each gave her of the world. However it was her teachers who grew her world view through education and reading. Michelle is married with two kids: Haden(9) and Alyssa(5). Michelle loves to read, and says, "If you've read a good book in the last year, come talk to me about it."
