Friday Focus

Holy Name of Mary, November 30th, 2018

Happy Friday!

You made it! Thank you to all of you for giving it your all this week. November is a tough month, and it's especially difficult to drag yourself in for that last day of the week when you've had late parent-teacher interviews the night before.

We hope you enjoyed finishing off the week with a Pyjama Day today and that you had an amazing afternoon with your Clubs! Thank you so much for continuing to show such great energy and enthusiasm despite surely being exhausted.

Have a great weekend!

Great teaching strategies

I came across this article about The Great Gingerbread House Project in my Twitter feed last week and thought I would share it with all of you. I know it looks messy, but it could be a great hands-on way to incorporate lots of great Math into a fun and creative Christmas activity. Students could supply their own box of graham crackers, and Bulk Barn has easy-to-make Royal Icing in bags. This would be a great project to show off on our Open House day!

Good Stuff

George Couros, author of "The Innovator's Mindset", often talks about the notion of "classroom teacher" vs. "school teacher" . I saw some great examples of "school teachers" in action this week! See if you can spot them below:

Hour of Code Week

December 3rd-7th is Hour of Code week! Check out https://hourofcode.com/ca. You do NOT need to know a thing about coding! Just click on the "Activities" tab and you'll find a huge resource of hour-long coding games organized by grade. No preparation or coding experience required.

Borrow some computers from a neighbouring class and see if you can get your whole class coding for a one-hour block sometime this week. As the mom of a young mechanical engineer, I'm pretty passionate about this stuff. Be sure to give me a call to your class if you are doing some coding next week. I'd love to come and learn alongside your kids!
